THE POSITION – WELDER (Jr.)
Kehoe Marine Construction is one of the largest employers in the 1000 Islands. We employ over 55 staff, and have a newly constructed professional office building, a 15,000 thousand square foot fabrication shop and a fleet of tugs and barges.
The Welder at Kehoe Marine Construction performs duties in the steel fabrication shop related to all elements of steel fabrication and welding in support of company operations including production of stationary and floating docks, lifts, boat houses and ports, as well as maintenance for company tugs and barges.
This is an on-site position at the fabrication shop located at 515 – 1000 Islands Parkway, Lansdowne Ontario. Reporting to the Shop Foreman, this role involves primarily working in the shop, although from time-to-time work will be required in the company yard or on a client worksite. The person can spend time outdoors and be subject to all weather conditions.
Kehoe Marine Construction invests in ongoing CWB training and certification for welders. Wages are competitive and the company offers a generous group benefit plan and health spending account.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES:
- The Welder promotes a safe work culture, is accountable to follow company safety procedures for their own safety, that of their teammates and for the safety of others who occasionally enter the shop and yard
- Knows, understands, communicates, and ensures compliance with the safety regulations (Health and Safety Act) and safety policies and procedures outlined by the company
- Performs welding operations using several welding processes including: FCAW, SMAW, and GMAW
- Operates basic hand tools and powered hand tools (i.e., drills, disc grinders, etc.)
- Operates equipment as described in company procedures (i.e., metal cutting saws, cutting torches, drills, grinders, material handling equipment)
- Ensures that timesheets are properly and accurately completed
- Interacts with company peers, supervisors, inspectors, and clients
- Discusses and plans with the shop foreman (or their designated alternate) the proposed work of the day
- Understands the work at hand, organizes the work and equipment
- Ensures that the completed work meets the specifications of the drawings and/or the company
- Ensures proper techniques are utilized to achieve the highest possible workmanship and quality of work
- Follows the project plans and schedules and ensures that personal daily and weekly activities meet production goals
- Inspects the completed work and initiates timely resolutions if required
- Ensures that our work is conducted in an environmentally responsible manner
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Clearly communicates information or questions to a member or members of their crew
- Following work standards and behavioral expectations to ensure crew morale and productivity while representing the company to the best of their ability
- Restricting the use of cell phones to company business only through the workday
- Ensuring that only positive and pro-active social media posts are generated, and only when appropriate to do so
- Completes incident and other safety reports in a timely manner
- Performs housekeeping duties to aid in maintaining a clean and safe work environment
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Primarily works in a fabrication shop for a marine construction company
- Occasionally works in the company yard or on a client worksite
- Standard workday hours (7:00am-4:30pm). Longer hours may be required periodically.
- Exposure to all elements – summer heat, rain etc.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Technical training in the Welding Trade
- Basic reading and writing skills
- Knowledge and respect of shop safety
- Ability to perform physically demanding work
- Ability to communicate orally effectively
- CWB Certification in several welding processes is considered an asset
- Ability to interpret shop drawings considered an asset
- Basic knowledge of structural steel shapes, sizes and grades considered an asset
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Have and maintain a Class G drivers’ licence with clean driving record
- Have or be willing / able to obtain a class “A” restricted licence
- Have use of a cell phone with data (company to compensate) or use a Company supplied cell phone for time tracking and communications purposes.
