The Fabrication and Welding shop supports all City business units with their manufacturing and welding needs. As a Welder Journeyman 1, you will be responsible for performing welding repairs and fabricating new parts using various metals such as aluminum and stainless steel. Primary duties include:
Meet with customers to identify their needs including deadlines, review and discuss drawings and blue prints, provide estimates on required time and materials.
Perform welding including disassembling parts, inspecting damage, determining the cut list, preparing surfaces to be welded (for example: grinding, using wire brush and cleaning surfaces).
Use cutting, heating and welding equipment and apply various welding processes.
Review and interpret engineered drawings to design prototypes and fabricate new parts for various work orders including handrails, truck bodies, sanders, hot boxes and frost hogs.
Qualifications
A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED) and a valid Journeyman Welder Certificate recognized by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board with Inter-Provincial certificate seal.
Preference will be given to those with a Canadian Welding Bureau certificate – mild steel and a minimum of 3 years of post-ticket experience.
A valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending is required.
Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB), “B” Pressure and/or Level 1 Welder Inspector certification are considered assets.
Previous experience using equipment such as brake press and/or shear, knowledge of aluminum and stainless work and the ability to read engineering drawings is preferred.
Success in this position requires strong leadership and customer service skills.
Demonstrate strong attention to technical detail and the ability to collaborate and work as part of a team.
Ability to complete Audio Metric testing.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in a shop environment and is subject to hazards such as arch-flashes, chemicals, fumes and gases.
Pre-employment Requirements
Must obtain a City of Calgary operator’s permit.
Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
Successful applicants must successfully complete a Pulmonary Function Test.
Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
