The Mechanic/Welder performs skilled mechanical and fabrication work in the repair and maintenance of diesel and gasoline-powered motor vehicles and other small equipment for an assigned road and bridge district. Work involves diagnosing malfunctions in light and heavy motorized equipment, removing and replacing or rebuilding worn or broken parts, and maintaining records of work performed.

Examples of Duties

Performs body work on various motorized vehicles, including using cutting, fabricating and welding body metal; maintains records of all service and repair provided.

Performs on-call road service maintenance and repair work as necessary.

Sets up emissions station for emissions inspections to be conducted.

Researches problems and diagnoses malfunction as necessary; fixes problems or orders parts to fix problems; researches parts and associated costs.

Trains and educates other employees as necessary.

Completes shop work order forms; ensures that all work orders are documented as necessary.

Inspects malfunctioning or non-functioning motorized vehicles and equipment, diagnoses need for repair and makes appropriate recommendations to supervisor.

Maintains inventories of replacement parts and supplies, including obtaining price bids from vendors; drives to pick up parts and equipment as necessary.

Adjusts valves, carburetors, generators, and related units; rebuilds or replaces worn or defective parts.

Performs major and minor mechanical repairs and adjustments on power drive, brake, steering, electrical, fuel, cooling, and related systems on light and heavy motorized equipment and vehicles.

Repairs and adjusts hydraulic and vacuum-operated systems.

Replaces hydraulic motors, hoses, and fittings.

Repairs bodies of motorized equipment, including patching or reshaping dents, and utilizing acetylene torches to cut, fabricate, and weld sheet metal.

Inspects equipment periodically to monitor preventive maintenance and performs preventative maintenance as necessary.

Regular and punctual attendance is required.

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

A High School diploma or GED and a minimum of two years of experience in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience is required.

Must possess a Class C Driver’s License issued by the State of Texas.

Class B Commercial Driver’s License with “N” endorsement issued by the State of Texas preferred.
