The Opportunity:
Canadian Natural has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Materials and Welding Specialist to join our Horizon Bitumen Production Oil Sands Team. As a whole, the Asset Integrity Department is responsible for “Ensuring the Safe, Complaint, Reliable Operation of our Oil Sands Assets”. The Asset Integrity Welding technologist is expected to take the lead when it comes to welding related queries and WPS approvals and the successful candidate will be an essential source of expertise providing professional guidance and support to our Maintenance Teams on welding support and repair procedures of all static equipments.

Key Accountabilities:
Reviewing different weld procedures for different welding applications to ensure conformance with CNRL and applicable Industry Engineering codes and standards such as ASME Sec. IX, B.31.3, ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1, 2 & 3, Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) Structural repair support

In-depth knowledge of welding and NDT codes and standards

Design, develop and specify processes for molding, forming and thermal treatment of metals, alloys, ceramics and other materials

Review specifications for welding process, base metals, filler metals, heat treatment, and NDE requirements

Select appropriate WPS and qualify a new WPS /PQR for new welding applications

Support Welder Qualifications for new vendors

Keep record and database of approved WPS Matrix and applicable piping class

Provides valuable welding technical input on complicated weld repairs, new material upgrade, SUS capital support on piping systems, Tanks, Pressure vessels. This includes heat input parameters, welding types and consumable for overlays for erosion applications

Manage the Lab and ensure and support failure investigations, hardness tests and micro structural analysis of samples

Conduct chemical and physical analytical studies, operational testing, and recommend materials and corrosion control measures

Support Materials and Corrosion queries as per the applicable and anticipated damage mechanism

Job location: Horizon Oil Sands – Fort McMurray, Alberta

Eligible for relocation to Calgary, Edmonton or Fort McMurray

Shift Schedule: 4 days on, 3 days off

Qualifications:
Engineering degree or college diploma (Metallurgy, Welding or Materials preferred)

Minimum 10+ years in oil and gas production plants, Oil Sands, refineries and/or chemical plants. Upstream Oil Sand Mining knowledge will be an added advantage

Detailed knowledge of welding procedures development and qualification (PQR, WPS and WPDS)

CSA W178.2 Level 2 Welding Inspector Certification, ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1, 2 & 3, ASME IX, B31.3, AWS D1.1 or CSA W59 and W47.1 and CSA B51

Knowledge in ASME B31.3, 31.4, API 570, 571, 579, 510, and 653 is an asset

Advanced knowledge of the weldability of ASME PCC 1, 3, 4, 5A, and 8 base metals is required, including selecting the welding process, filler metals, heat treatment, and post-welding NDE

ABSA WELDING EXAMINER certification is required

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
