Job Summary

Employee is responsible for welding and fabricating metal on city-owned vehicles, equipment, and buildings. Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.

Essential Job Functions

Maintain regular and prompt attendance; physically present to work

Responsible for welding and fabrication of metal on vehicles, machinery, and equipment in the City fleet.

Responsible for welding and fabrication of metal on City property such as buildings, Airport Hangers, and around manholes or storm inlets, as needed.

Plans details of work order procedures; gathers required tools and materials based on instructions and specifications for the job.

Maintains a clean and orderly welding shop.

Notifies supervisor when faulty equipment or defective materials are discovered.

Performs other similar or related duties as assigned.

Employee may be required to work beyond normal business hours at night and/or on weekends.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

One to three (1-3) year work related experience.

Applicant must pass pre-employment criminal background check and drug screen at City’s expense.

Applicate must have current valid Class “C” Driver’s License and be insurable

Must have high school diploma; or equivalent.

Must successfully complete Emergency Management and Incident Command Training within first three months of hire date.

Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred.

Skills and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE: – Working knowledge of oxy-ace, ark metal, welding and plasma fabrication techniques and practices. Working knowledge of the use of electricity and safety equipment related to welding or fabricating duties.

SKILLS: – Proficient metal welding repair and fabrication skills.

ABILITIES: – Ability to make welding repairs in accordance with accepted practices and techniques. Ability to work effectively with other employees. Ability to manage multiple tasks in a prioritized, safe, and detailed manner. Ability to use a wide range of shop tools including a shop saw, air tools, and other electrical equipment in a safe and efficient manner.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Work requires some agility and physical strength, such as moving in, about construction sites, or over rough terrain, or must be able to remain stationary or moving about most of the work period. Frequently lifts, moves, positions up to 60 lbs.

Employee must have the ability to make good judgement when making decisions regarding their regular job duties and be able to have the following mental functions, reading, simple math calculations, and withstanding moderate amounts of stress.

ACCOUNTABILITY: Consequences of errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment may include customer relations or significant time loss.

JUDGMENT: Numerous standardized practices, procedures, or general instructions govern the work and, in some cases, may require additional interpretation. Judgement is needed to locate, select, and apply the most pertinent practice, procedure, regulation, or guideline.

COMPLEXITY: Work consists of a variety of duties that generally follow standardized practices, procedures, regulations, or guidelines. The sequence of work and/or the procedures followed vary according to the nature of the transaction and/or the information involved, or sought, in a particular situation.

SUPERVISION REQUIRED: The employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently with specific instruction. The supervisor provides instruction for new or unusual assignments. Unusual situations are referred to the supervisor for advice and further instructions. Supervisor reviews work to remain aware of progress, work methods, and technical accuracy. In many cases, the work is self-checking, for example, requiring accounts to balance before proceeding.

NATURE AND PURPOSE OF PERSONAL CONTACTS: The majority of interactions is with internal co-workers and require ordinary courtesy and tact. Employee interacts with co-workers to give and receive information regarding work. Contacts with the public takes place on an occasional basis.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Working conditions involve exposure to intermittent machine or related noise or a combination of unpleasant elements such as odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease. Includes work under typical shop conditions or outdoor work that is suspended when weather conditions are poor. Work may involve general cleaning, occasional work at heights or in confined or cramped quarters, or work around machinery and its moving parts. Work may also involve occasional mental stress, such as completing several unrelated tasks within a relatively short period of time.

MOTOR SKILLS: Duties may involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination. Examples include operating a motor vehicle, operates a personal computer or ascends / descends a ladder.

OCCUPATIONAL RISKS: Duties regularly present potential risk of injuries from improper exposure that could result in loss of time from work. Examples of injury include burns from chemicals, steam, or fire, severe muscular strains from working with extremely heavy material, falls from heights more than three feet and illness from exposure to communicable diseases. Special safety precautions, training, or protective clothing such as gowns, coats, gloves, glasses, hats or boots may be required.
