The Strait Regional (0052) invites applications from qualified candidates for the posted vacancy. As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success. The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,050 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.” In 2022-2023, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,931 students; and approximately 369 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations. Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

Work Schedule: 8hr/day (casual, on call basis)

Responsibilities:
SRCE casual welding tradespersons may be required to support transportation or maintenance or project activities whenever additional resources within their skillset are needed to maintain operations or project schedules. Specific SRCE casual tradesperson duties are listed below.
Duties
Builds, repairs, maintains, and installs systems related to their specific trade and experience;
Assists in the planning and co-ordination of building or capital improvement projects. Determines material quantities and potential work time for proposed upgrades, installations, repairs and projects to ensure accurate estimating of costs and schedules;
Performs semi-skilled work and labour associated with other trades as required;
Ensures all work is done according to standard practices, design specifications, national, provincial and local building codes, other applicable standards and good practice of the trade;
Provides emergency response and corrective action for urgent building issues;
Maintains appropriate records including recording equipment repair history, work orders, daily job card, vehicle records, test reports, and other related data;
Completes and documents work orders including time and materials and submits to operations department;
Provides written reports on any inspections and/or tests and makes recommendations to improve performance;
Ensures duties are performed in a fiscally responsible manner while observing all safety practices and regulations;
Evaluates status of buildings and facilities as assigned and provides written reports;
Perform duties in compliance with school, Operations Department, and SRCE policies and procedures including Occupational Health, safety, attendance, work routines, WHMIS and evacuation plans and the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia;
Other related duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications:
Grade 12 High School Diploma or academic equivalent through educational programs such as a Graduated Equivalent Diploma;
Red Seal or journeyperson certification in welding; and five years’ experience years in a building maintenance environment;
Previously demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
Previously demonstrated organizational skills.
Excellent knowledge of OHS procedures and regulations.
Ability to work with minimum supervision;
Ability to work effectively and productively in a team environment.
Physical and mechanical aptitude to perform a full range of maintenance and manual tasks which could include overhead welding;
Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics, blueprints, code specifications, and diagrams for installation and repair of building systems and equipment;
Working knowledge of applicable regulatory, building and trades guidelines and codes;
Valid driver’s license;
Current CPR & First Aid certification or willing to obtain prior to employment.
