Supervisor for Welding/Repair Shop

Boundary Equipment Co. Ltd. has been engineering, manufacturing and supplying wear parts to the worldwide mining community for over 40 years. Boundary specializes in the supply of undercarriage systems for large hydraulic and electric rope shovels as well as the supply of wear parts for apron feeders and the supply of slag pots and ladles for copper smelters worldwide.

Boundary Equipment – is seeking a supervisor to manage component repair and fabrication for large mining shovels, including the CAT 7495 – offering an excellent opportunity for long term employment and competitive compensation for a mature, experienced supervisor with welder/millwright or other tradesman experience. The applicant must be a good communicator, motivated, have excellent computer skills and experience in completing all aspects of managing the work site with minimal supervision.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Shop Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the General Manager, the candidate is responsible to manage welders and perform hands on work as required. In this role, the applicant’s mandate will be focused on managing the highest quality repairs in a safe manner, meeting production processes and productivity objectives, maintaining parts and consumables stock level, maintaining harmonious labour relations, and demonstrating leadership by implementing continuous improvement processes.

The applicant must be experienced with using production drawings and working independently or with minimal supervision completing jobs related to welding structural components, castings and forgings.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Mentor, train and lead all shop personnel to foster a safe, organized, productive, team-oriented work environment.
  • Assign duties to the shop personnel as appropriate, maintain the integrity of the process, and assure that established policies and procedures are applied.
  • Use ERP system processes to generate sales orders, work orders, purchase orders required for the shop operations. Maintain the system and manage job profitability and on time delivery.
  • Observe and evaluate the effectiveness and efficiencies of the manufacturing/production operations, recommend process and/or equipment improvements and coordinate the implementation of the approved changes.
  • Process and approve personnel time cards and labor tickets.
  • Ensure ERP system tasks are completed and Kanban production boards are updated on time.
  • Evaluate the job requests, prepare work flow process and provide the cost estimate to the customer.
  • The applicant will manage and develop staff within their department.
  • Listen, respond and follow-up to the needs and requests of the shop employees.
  • Co-ordinate and follow up on the shop cleanliness and the facility maintenance and improvements.
  • Other duties as required.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE/ QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Journeymen welder, millwright or tradesman.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ hands-on experience in manufacturing, preferably in repairing heavy mining equipment.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a supervisory capacity.

OTHER PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Flexible, service-oriented and hands-on management professional who can successfully direct, motivate and train staff.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, coaching, mentoring, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to make critical decisions to accomplish production goals.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, juggling multiple tasks and projects on a daily bases.

  • Wear, maintain and enforce proper PPE that is requested by employer
