Overview

The Welding Quality Control (WQC) Technician (NDE) is responsible for in-process and formal inspections for all specific trade systems at any stage of construction. The position is responsible for ensuring specifications, class rules, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and work instructions are in accordance at each stage of construction. The WQC Technician is responsible for the Inspection and Test Plan for the specific trade area or system. The position performs daily in-process quality control inspections to identify non-conformities with contract requirements, develops corrective actions and communicates requirements to shop personnel. The WQC Technician also attends formal inspections with owners and regulatory bodies. The WQC Technician will specialize in mechanical or non-destructive testing (NDT). WQC Technician (NDE) will coordinate and mange NDE requests, and reports.

Depending on WQC team’s workload in day and afternoon shifts, when required, this position is expected to partially cover afternoon shift (maximum of 4 hours).

Duties/Accountabilities

  • Reviews specifications, class rules, work instructions and SOPs to determine trade specific quality requirements for each contract.
  • Develops new construction and repair projects’ Inspection and Test Plans for trade specific systems.
  • Ensures Inspection and Test plans are implemented in accordance with contract requirements.
  • Coordinates NDE for all the on-going projects including reviewing and submitting NDE requests, and NDE reports.
  • Performs daily in-process quality inspections of trade specific work. Documents and communicates results to responsible supervisors.
  • Attends formal inspections with customers and regulatory bodies. Documents all non-conformities and provides results to responsible supervisors and the QA/QC Department.
  • Works with trade and area supervisors to improve in-process quality.
  • Performs gap analyses of work instructions and SOPs for trade specific systems. Communicates results to respective area, and assists in modifying or adding work instructions and SOPs as required.
  • Maintains quality files for trade specific area.
  • Performs periodic audits of trade specific suppliers to ensure compliance with contract requirements.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum 8 years documented experience working as a NDE and/or Welding QC inspector/coordinator (5 years of experience using NDE techniques is preferred) – Structural and Piping
  • Current valid CWB CSA W178.2 level 2 Welding Inspector certification is required (or AWS CWI to receive CWB certification)
  • Current valid CGSB PT and MT Level II Certification is required
  • Relevant trade experience is desirable.
  • Certification and comprehensive training in UT and/or RT is highly desirable
