Overview
In addition to assisting the Welding Superintendent the incumbent provides support for long range planning activities such as evaluating new welding technologies.
Duties/Accountabilities
Labour Force Planning
Assist in the development of welder assignment plans giving due consideration to customer & classification society requirements (i.e. D-49, DEFSTAN, IACS, Lloyds, DMV-GL…)
Department/Team Management
May be involved in the hiring and lay off of unionized employees as per the collective agreement. Monitors daily labour-hour usage and costs of specific projects.
Assists in organizing monthly toolbox meetings for all employees in the department.
Takes disciplinary actions and keeps record of the same for department employees with regard to any violation of Seaspan company policies
Works with Human Resource personnel on the resolution of any grievances or questions brought forward by the Union.
Assists in the evaluation of employee performance before 60 day probationary period expires.
Other
In concert with supervisors, assess deployed equipment and examine alternates that provide greater efficiencies.
Assess the labour market for the availability of sub contracted labour services and make recommendations to the Welding Superintendent where such services could be applied.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma
Trade Certification in a relevant subject area (Red Seal in Welding preferred)
A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in a supervisory capacity within an Industrial Environment (Ship Repair preferred)
Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies
Experience with shipyard industry work processes and practices.
CSA W178.2 Welding Inspector Certification (Level 1 minimum – Level 2 preferred)
Must be self-motivated and able to initiate reviews and investigations into systems and procedures to ensure efficient and effective processes are in place and being adhered to.
Excellent technical, analytical, problem solving, decision making, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Proven track record to lead, direct and supervise the work of others who support production activities.
Excellent negotiation and organizational skills.
Ability to manage a budget.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Demonstration of exemplifying business ethics, integrity and honesty in all situations
