JOB TITLE: Fence/Welding Technician

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt

REPORTS TO: Grounds Foreman

PAY GRADE: 5

PRIMARY PURPOSE: To assist in maintaining the grounds of all District campuses in a condition of safety, neatness, and attractiveness. Maintain all equipment used in grounds maintenance in good mechanical working condition.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education/Certification:
Able to read and comprehend verbal and written instructions; able to prepare written reports that are a necessary function of this assignment.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Possess a valid Class C Texas Driver’s License, with the proper endorsements to allow the employee to legally perform his/her task, and qualify for insurability with the district insurance carrier
  • Possess the ability to drive and or operate a backhoe, front end loader, dump truck, and all types of tractors and other related equipment used in this position.
  • Possess the ability to weld all types of metals, and knowledge of all acetylene/oxygen torches and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of concrete repairs, welding repairs, and fence repairs.
  • Working knowledge of all phases of grounds maintenance including mowing, tree trimming, and all general landscaping
  • Aptitude to successfully complete assigned tasks
  • Ability to work collaboratively to meet the needs of the district
  • Ability to supervise and train assigned grounds person

Minimum Experience:
Possess the ability to successfully build and repair chain link, pipe rail, and wood picket fences. Must be able to successfully use TIG and MIG welders to make routine welding repairs associated with grounds maintenance. Must be knowledgeable and capable of making all concrete repairs to district sidewalks, driveways, and floors.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Ability to do the work of the position with minimal supervision
  • Use precaution to safely use and transport equipment
  • Be responsible for the use, care, and maintenance of assigned equipment
  • Ability to inspect and ensure jobs are completed before leaving job site
  • Working knowledge of equipment used in completion of assigned jobs
  • Perform welding repairs of all district equipment
  • Use of backhoe to complete assigned work orders
  • Use of all district equipment to complete assigned work orders
  • Maintain district fences to original specifications
  • Maintain districts parking lots to original specifications
  • Ability to lift and carry 61 or more pounds without assistance
  • Practice high standards of safety and good housekeeping
  • Maintain written records required of daily activities
  • Any other duties as may be directed by the Grounds Foreman

SUPERVISORY RESPONSBILITIES:

  • Directly supervises a Grounds Person
  • Ensures that staff abides by Irving ISD policies and procedures

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Must maintain emotional control and exercise reasoning and problem solving skills while under stress. Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision-making. Frequent in-district and occasional in-state or national travel. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.

Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
