THIS ROLE:
The Lead Shipyard Welder will work directly with the Shipyard Manager on supporting the overall shipyard projects. The Lead Shipyard Welder performs standard tasks involved with project production in the shipyard. The Lead Shipyard Welder utilizes welding equipment to complete work per specifications and in accordance with the production schedule. The Lead Shipyard Welder manages all aspects of the welding department, including the maintenance of equipment, training and mentoring, and evaluation of employees in the Welder Apprentice positions. This individual must possess a high attention to detail and quality over the production both from himself directly and/or from the other Welders and Apprentices.

This is an essential role in a fast-paced environment that requires thinking quickly and effectively while maintaining a positive attitude. The Lead Shipyard Welder will always follow safe work practices and be responsible for helping everyone learn and maintain the Curtin Standard.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:
Work as directed supporting Shipyard Projects

Work includes set-up, laying out work using fixtures and guides to repair, modify, or fabricate parts and/or equipment products.

Weld steel components with welding equipment as specified by procedures, layouts, blueprints, diagrams, work orders, or oral instructions. Welds range for simple tacks to complex welds, performed in varying positions.

Keep equipment operational by completing preventative maintenance requirements; follow manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshoot malfunctions; call for repairs and complete the daily check sheets.

Read, understand, and follow job order specifications, blueprints, work instructions, and procedures.

Manage and train welding crews, including apprentices

Conduct in-house quality control surveys and safety inspections

Final Assembly of pre-assembled modules

Ability to select and set up appropriate welding equipment for tasks assigned.

Ability to operate and/or use related equipment and tools which include forklifts, hoists, slings, grinders (portable& bench), cutting torches, hand tools, drills, punches, a tape measure, etc.

Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures rules, and regulations.

Ability to select and wear the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for this position, including hearing protection, safety glasses, safety boots with metatarsal guards, face shield, welding helmet, welding gloves, welding sleeves/jacket (leather or cloth), and a respirator may also be required.

WHO YOU ARE:
Certifications and Other Requirements

Certified Welder

Proficient in stick welding (all positions)

Proficient in mig welding.

Proficient in use of plasma.

Ability to identify and remedy design flaws

Ability to fabricate

Ability to weld Flux Core

Proficient in oxy-acetylene torch

Production welding capability

Ability to measure and cut material.

Ability to read and comprehend a tape measure.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Valid State Driver’s License

Clean Driving Record

Clear Criminal Background Check

Physical & DOT Drug Test

TWIC Card (can be acquired once hired)
