Position Overview

As a Fabricator, you will be responsible for reading and interpreting engineering blueprints, fabricating metal components or structures, and performing quality checks on finished products. You may also be required to set up fabricating machines and design custom templates. Cut, bend, weld and finish custom parts/products that meet customer specifications. Position must be for a self-starter and individuals must be able to organize project workflow in designated areas.

Role and Responsibilities

Operate in the shop and field with little or no supervision

Anticipate and solve problems prior to fabrication and installation

Check measurements and dimensions of each piece that is being worked on with rulers, measuring tapes or squares

Place each product component in its appropriate spot as noted in the blueprints for proper alignment by using a hammer, pry bar, jack, wedge, or another tool

Mark spots to cut and use tools to manipulate steel, plastic, or other materials by cutting, hammering, bending, or grinding the workpiece

Employ furnaces or hand torches to heat up materials to make them more flexible for bending or manipulation into the correct specification

Review blueprints, drawings, and other specification papers before starting work on a fabrication process and during the steps to ensure accurate completion

Maneuver fabrication machines, such as grinders, drill presses, brakes, rolls, shears, and flame cutters to cut, bend, grind and adjust materials

Create and follow templates and jigs for common work tasks when conducting repetitive motions for the fabrication process to ensure a set standard of work quality

Use proper handling and fabrication techniques for specialty alloys (stainless, aluminum)

Follow prints and work orders to cut, fabricate, and assemble parts in accordance with production guidelines

Accurately measure, calculate, and record material usage and time tracking by project

Use the shear, bandsaw, torch, and other methods to accurately cut, clean, deburr and prep parts for welding

Lay out, position, square, and secure parts and assemblies prior to welding to achieve specified tolerances

Adhere to quality standards while accurately measuring and documenting results

Wear PPE, protective clothing and operate equipment in accordance with safety guidelines

Operate in the shop and field with little or no supervision

Organize tasks and operations into an efficient, prioritized work plan

Demonstrate expertise with all fabrication processes from cutting to finishing with minimal errors

Must be proficient in complex custom fabrication with the ability to create custom jigs and fixtures as needed

Independently operating MIG and TIG welders to produce consistent high quality welds on mild steel in multiple positions

Can work with specialty alloys such as stainless, aluminum, and at times, brass

Fabricate with all shapes and sizes of materials from thin sheet metal to plate, rod, bar, beam, channel, etc.

Examines specifications of the customer’s order using drawings, work orders, or blueprints to determine the characteristics of the finished item, materials to be used, and machine setup requirements

Must be able to maintain weldment geometry to print tolerance, and layout work without assistance

Fabricates work piece(s) as determined by work order specifications. Retrieves correct materials, prepares workbench, and sets up appropriate tools to complete the job

Performs various fabrication duties including sawing, clamping, holding, fitting, bolting, welding, finishing, and grinding parts as necessary to satisfy requirements and meet specifications

Examines work piece visually, by touch, using tape rule, calipers, or gauges to ensure product meets desired standards

Performs quality control on products produced by lower level fabricators

Maintains condition of work area (i.e., free of trash, product in correct location, etc.) performs other duties as assigned

Should be able and willing to provide basic direction to fellow fabricators

Set the tone in the shop, train by example for lower level fabricators

Supervise lower level fabricators when necessary with setting up projects and meeting deadlines

Interpret, perform, and pass inspections for all structural welds

Reliably meet or exceed estimated production times

Education/ Experience Requirements

High school diploma or a GED equivalent

At least five years of experience in fabrication or welding

Skills

Ability to read, interprets, and follows safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

Ability to comprehend blueprints, drawings, schematics, technical procedures, and other related material

Ability to follow written and verbal directions to perform to the quality standards

Ability to apply basic mathematical skills to solve technical problems

Utilize knowledge of all metallic and non-metallic materials

Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time

Ability to lift or move up to 35-50 pounds; over 50 pounds with assistance

Must be able to wear safety equipment and follow safety instructions
