What responsibilities will you have in this role?

Maintains and inspects shop equipment to meet safety standards.

Researches innovative practices in industry and apply in the shop environment.

Assist lead Technologist with daily operations and advice if needed.

Ensures that all necessary instruments, equipment and supplies for scheduled lab and field exercises are in working order and in place according to established procedures and standards.

Assists staff in the coordination, organization, installation, modification and/or preparation of experiment/test – specimens/solutions/samples, instruments, and equipment.

Assists staff and students in the safe use of associated materials, instruments, and equipment.

Controls the issue, allotment, and repair of instructional and allied equipment. Installs, maintains, and monitors inventory and their security; does simple repairs and/or orders replacement parts for various equipment, materials, and instruments.

Ensures that work areas are well maintained and that adequate supplies are available.

Conducts demonstrations on the correct procedures, for use and application of lab and field equipment.

Oversees the usage and ensures that the facilities/work areas are organized and kept clean for the specific activities.

Deals with external monitoring services, maintains a database for equipment, instruments, and facilities.

Other related duties as assigned.

What qualifications do you need for this role?

Secondary School Diploma or above the general level, with certificate as Journeyman or equivalent is required.

One year of related, progressive work experience is required; with related technical experience and a background in technical or mechanical studies, preventative maintenance, safe shop practices and parts management systems.

Ability to use hand/power tools, make simple mechanical repairs is needed. Superior customer service and communication skills.

Knowledge of key principles, (e.g., basic electrical/electronic) and practical knowledge in relevant discipline, combined with basic understanding of computer hardware and software.

Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Ability to work from blueprints/shop drawings.

Exceptional problem-solving skills; ability to troubleshoot and resolve conflict exercising tact, discretion and sound judgment; ability to prioritize.

Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to cope under pressure associated with the management of numerous high-volume tasks in a busy service environment; high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability to work independently and as a team member.

Ability to work in an environment where diversity of people and situations are encountered.

Demonstrated commitment in delivering excellent service to others as this is key in supporting the success of our students and our College.

Strong communication, collaboration, teamwork, and people skills.

Flexibility in adapting to change and in participating in consultative decision-making processes.

Interview process may consist of a practical skills component.
