Building and maintaining our provincial infrastructure is no small job.
The Building Services Group at the Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotia’s 2,400 buildings and infrastructure assets across a wide range of clients. We maintain and support various government buildings and other built assets, including museums, core buildings and office buildings supporting the work of government, correctional centres, and justice centres.
Without our Building Services staff’s proactive measures, equipment issues or failures could lead to an interruption of services provided. Streamfitters/Welders are just one of our key team players who support the overall safety and efficiency of our provincial building infrastructure.
About Our Opportunity
Under the general supervision of the Mechanical Superintendent or the Plumber Foreperson, the Steamfitter/Welder lays out, assembles, fabricates, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs piping systems carrying water, steam, chemicals and fuel in heating, cooling, lubricating and other process piping systems in provincially owned buildings, serviced by the Department This may include, but not be limited to, baseboard and unit heaters, piping systems, domestic and waste water systems, boilers, chilled water systems, pumps and plumbing fixtures. The Steamfitter/Welder is responsible for insuring that all work is completed in compliance with the National Plumbing Code of Canada, National Building Code of Canada, National Fire Code of Canada and department requirements.
Primary Accountabilities
The primary accountabilities of this position are:
Investigates plumbing and heating complaints and problems. Recommends and implements solutions. May include water main breaks, loss of heat or water, washroom facilities.
Investigates problems and makes necessary repairs to furnaces, small boilers, including some burner investigations.
Repairs hot water and steam heating systems including connectors, pipelines, radiators, heating coils and unit heaters.
Performs miscellaneous welding work in the fabrication and repair of equipment.
Fabricates various objects from oral instructions.
Assists with design and layout of renovations to plumbing and heating systems, verifying design and technical mechanical requirements for code compliance.
Qualifications and Experience
High school and Nova Scotia Certificate of Qualification – Steamfitter and two (2) years experience with a Certificate of Qualification in commercial/industrial, construction.
Frequent travel across the province is a component of this position; as such, a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required. Please include a copy of your current drivers abstract with your application.
You demonstrate an excellent working knowledge of the following:
Must be proficient in maintenance, repair troubleshooting and installation of all types of plumbing, heating and mechanical systems.
Knowledge of the standard tools, materials, motions, and practices of the welding trade.
Skill in the use of, gas metal arc welding (GMAW), plasma arc welding (PAW), oxy-acetylene cutting, resistance welding equipment.
Have a very good working knowledge of the National Plumbing Code.
Have a good working knowledge of the National Building Code, National Fire Code, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Occupational Safety General Regulations.
A good working knowledge of current construction safety practices and procedures.
Must be able to read and interpret specifications and drawings.
Your ability to work within financial constraints, along with reading and interpreting specifications and drawings are essential to your success in this role. Also essential to this position are strong public relations skills, planning and organizational skills as well as good verbal and written communications skills.
Safety training in the following are considered assets: First Aid certification and CPR, WHMIS, Scaffolding Safety, Fall Protection, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, and Confined Space Awareness. Formal training in Project Management, a good knowledge of government procurement policy and tendering procedures are also considered assets.
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions
Most of your work is completed indoors, but also occasionally outside where normal hazards of a construction site are present. Your safety is important to us, and we count on you to follow all safe work practices when handling machinery, tools, and materials. Some of your duties will require you to climb, work at heights, or within confined spaces.

Salary Range: $30.91 – $32.75 Hourly
