The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Welder – Aviation Maintenance Division

The Aviation Department which operates the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and the North Perry Airport (HWO) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Welder for the Airport’s Maintenance Division. Under general supervision, the Welder will work independently performing specialized welding, design and fabrication work at FLL. In addition, the Welder will be responsible for developing methods and sequences needed to improve, enhance and repair equipment required to maintain operations. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment. Employees work shifts over a five-day work schedule with two consecutive days off during the week.
General Description
The purpose of this class within the organization is to perform specialized welding and fabrication work in the County.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires two (2) years in welding repair and maintenance or closely related experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses Required:
Welding technology certificate depending on area of assignment.
Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver’s License based on area of assignment.
Must be able to obtain/maintain Airport security & customs badging.
Must be able to obtain/maintain Airfield driving privileges, movement & non movement.
Preferences:
Airport experience as it relates to hot permit requirements
Tig and Mig welding experience
Heliarc welding experience
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.
Works under general supervision, finishing tasks in a timely manner; determines the type of welding or fabrication necessary to complete the task; prepares shop drawings and sketches for fabrication projects; responsible for the all equipment in the welding shop and service trucks.
Repairs broken road maintenance equipment and construction equipment; assigns and supervises the work of helpers; inspects completed work to ensure that it meets safety standards.
Performs layout work and fabricates attachments on new equipment; orders materials, parts, supplies and equipment that is needed for shop operations.
Keeps records and old drawings to refer back to if needed.
Performs related work as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Physical Demands
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
Involves routine and frequent exposure to electrical shocks.
