Job Description

To perform a variety of routine and skilled work in the repair and maintenance of steel and plastic containers used in solid waste operations.

Essential Duties

CORE COMPETENCIES:
Prepares Pre-Trip and Post-Trip vehicle inspection reports according to the division’s policies; checking fluid levels and operating condition of assigned truck. Reports any malfunctions or repair work needed to Supervisor. Performs operator level preventive maintenance; to include daily cleaning, on assigned vehicle and equipment.

Drives medium duty truck containing portable welder, cutting torch and other tools necessary to repair dumpster boxes and automated side loader containers; repairs and maintains steel and plastic containers used in the commercial and residential solid waste collection system; operates roll-off truck and container hauler truck while picking up and returning containers to customers.

Operates the portable welder vehicle in high risk traffic conditions; remains alert to surrounding environment and potential safety hazards; collects, repairs, and delivers containers in a safe manner, assuring the safety of the general public; maintains radio or other communications with the supervisor and/or office.

Adheres to safety precautions and regulations related to the operation of equipment to include utilizing electric/gas welding equipment; complies with all City and departmental safety rules, policies, and procedures; uses and wears personal protective equipment and clothing, and complies with safe working controls; reports all accidents or injuries to the supervisor immediately; completes reports as required.

Effectively works together to meet the needs of the community and City through superior customer service, commitment and integrity; Serves as backup to the Commercial Equipment Operator as needed.

Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations; and complies with City of Killeen driving policy accordingly.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school or equivalent,

One (1) year of welding experience; or

Any equivalent combination of related education and experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions;

Working knowledge of welding operations;

Ability to perform operations safely;

Knowledge of the proper procedures for operating, inspecting and maintaining assigned equipment and tools;

Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time, often under adverse weather conditions;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors and the public;

Knowledge of City ordinance pertaining to municipal solid waste collection and disposal services.

Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Special Requirements:
Must have a valid Texas CDL (Class B) License.

Tools and Equipment Used

Motorized vehicles and equipment, including roll-off truck, container hauler, arc, electric and gas welder, cutting torch, grinder, drill, steam cleaner, and hand tools, radio, and safety equipment.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

This position is a safety sensitive position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
