The Opportunity

Reporting to the Track Supervisor the Assistant Track Maintenance Welder is responsible for corrective and preventative welding of various rail infrastructure components. He/she also supports emergency response and performs track inspection, when required. The Assistant Track Maintenance Welder undertakes welding work under the supervision of the Track Maintenance Welder. This is a full time opportunity based out of the

Oakville area, and work will take place in the Kitchener/Hamilton to Toronto area.

Key Responsibilities and Functions

  • Perform track welding and repair according to established work standards and procedures;
  • Execute the work related to various welding activities (on both carbon steel and manganese) such as: rail end welding and slotting; welding and grinding of switch points, frogs and other turnout components; thermite welding;
  • Support rail flaw detection testing on the territory;
  • Snow clearing from railway turnouts (switches) and other key track and right of way components –

Winter;

  • Repair of deficiencies in the track structure, as directed;
  • Safe operation, maintenance and upkeep of medium-duty hi-rail welding truck, and installed equipment
  • Other related tasks as required.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license of “G” classification (Ontario);
  • Certification in railway thermite welding, from a recognized training provider;
  • Completion of recognized railway track welding program through Class 1 railway or other qualified training provider;
  • Safety minded work ethic;
  • Ability to read/write/speak English;
  • Experience with welding / grinding / finishing repair of manganese steel castings;
  • Experience with welding / grinding / finishing repair of carbon rails of various grades (3HB, IH, HH,

AHH);

  • Completion of recognized welding training program in the province of Ontario
  • Completion of approved Track Inspection Guidelines (TIG) program;
  • Experience with welding / grinding / finishing repair of carbon steel switch points of various grades and profiles;
  • Completion of rail defect identification appreciation program is an asset;
  • Computer skills (office suites, form entry, other) is an asset
  • Certification in Transportation of Dangerous Goods.
  • Experienced in the use of Oxygen/Propane cutting and preheating processes an asset.
  • Must be able endure repetitive physical work activities and lift and carry approximately 60lbs;
  • Available to work on various work cycles with occasional overtime.
