This position provides the option to work from home on Mondays and Fridays each week, with the requirement to report to the primary NOVA Chemicals work location on Tuesdays through Thursdays. Employees can opt out of the hybrid schedule and will be expected to work Monday-Friday from the primary work location.

We are seeking a Senior Materials Engineer to become part of the NOVA Chemicals Central Engineering Team. The Senior Materials Engineer will leverage their expertise company wide as the NOVA Chemicals Metallurgy and Welding subject matter expert (SME). This role will support new and existing petrochemicals projects and operating units with development of specifications, testing, inspection and failure analysis of welding and fabrication related technical issues, materials selection, materials integrity, and related Materials Engineering responsibilities to support asset integrity and reliability.
You Will Use Your Expertise To:
Serve as the corporate consulting resource to operational unit mechanical and inspections groups on all matters relating to Materials Engineering – design, repair, modification, etc.
Provide field level investigation support to materials-based failures/issues, corrosion, cracking, etc. when escalated from manufacturing.
Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) on potential degradation mechanisms and mitigation measures.
Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Root Cause Failure analysis related to material failure incidents and lead critical material related failure investigations.
Act as the interface between external lab analysis providers for critical investigations.
Serve as the corporate welding resource as it relates to metallurgical performance including guidance in selection, use, and development of welding procedures.
Complete or support technical evaluations of in-service material life expectancy.
Provide materials and welding guidance on capital projects and research initiatives.
Review engineering deliverables to ensure compliance with specifications, design practices, materials engineering, and integrity best practices.
Stay abreast of industry practices and learnings and ensure these learnings are incorporated at NOVA to ensure safe reliable operations.
Lead and participate in NOVA discipline networks including providing technical mentorship.
Leverage internal and external SME network.
Develop and maintain corporate materials and welding related standards.
What We Are Looking For:
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related disciplines
Professional Engineer status or ability to obtain professional status in either Alberta or Ontario
Minimum of 12 years of relevant experience as materials engineer/welding engineer or similar with direct owner/user company responsibilities in refinery or petrochemical (or upstream oil & gas) facilities (or an engineering/technical organization)
Knowledgeable in the manufacturing, processing, fabrication, and heat-treating practices that affect material properties
Familiar with key interfacing processes within Discipline Engineering (rotating, static, inspection), Manufacturing- plant support process and Research and Development (materials)
Experience with high temperature damage mechanisms
Demonstrated experience in leading failure analyses and lessons learned capture
Demonstrated understanding of the suitability of metallic (and non-metallic) materials in petrochemicals applications. Understanding of damage mechanisms associated with metallic (and non-metallic) materials and how they degrade material performance
Experience with applicable industry codes/standards (e.g., National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE), American Petroleum Institute (API), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM))
Understanding of laboratory testing techniques (e.g., optical microscopy, SEM) used for materials characterization
Knowledgeable in understanding microstructural features in steels and alloys and their influence on physical properties. Applied knowledge in the properties and microstructures formed in carbon and low alloy steel weld metals and HAZs
Understanding and application of welding codes and ability to determine code requirements for welding procedure qualification and experience developing welding procedures
Demonstrated ability to define QA/QC requirements (parameter monitoring, visual inspection, and NDE requirements) for welding applications
Demonstrated knowledge in industry fabrication codes and other standards utilized in NOVA, e.g., ASME B&PV Code and Piping Standards
Strong leadership, influencing, and interpersonal skills. Ability to coach, influence, and deliver through others without formal authority, e.g., leveraging internal SMEs and external resources
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong communication and collaborative skills with technical, projects, and operational stakeholders, both internally and externally
Ability to lead change and manage multiple priorities
Good understanding of project life cycle and department interfaces

Additional Information:
This position can be located at any of the following locations (Manufacturing East locations – Sarnia, ON, NOVA Head Office – Calgary, AB, Red Deer Executive Place – Red Deer, AB.)
Relocation will be considered to the nearest geographical NOVA Chemicals’ location for this position
Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
This role requires up to 10-20% travel
The successful candidate is required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license and passport
