POSITION: Manager, Production & Fabrication

ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:
Manages production on the shop floor for internal and external refurbishment work. Works with teams to ensure schedules are adhered to and work is performed according to scope and customer expectations.

MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees the direction of unionized Carman, Electricians, Pipefitters, Production Workers, Cleaners, and Support Workers working on both internal and external coach refurbishment projects.

Monitor and take action to correct or change work processes and/or methods as required in order to meet the schedule and/or budget.

Follow up with production schedules to ensure work is completed in accordance with customer contract obligations.

Actively gather and contribute to continuous improvements to increase efficiencies including inspiring staff to embrace a continuous improvement culture

Discusses daily operations with all supervisors.

Provides arbitration for conflicting production demands.

Maintain daily contact with the Sr. Manager of Operations to ensure production line tasks are assigned and completed as scheduled and corrective action is taken to prevent slippage.

Re-assign staff as required to maintain refurbishment program schedules.

Conduct daily safety observations and ensure direct reports complete same.

Ensure employees in both the Car Shop and Fab Shop are properly trained in the duties that they perform and do so safely, efficiently, and in a positive work environment.

Ensures employees comply with all Health and Safety regulations within the workplace

Participates as an alternate member of the Workplace Health and Safety Committee

Assist with the calling of overtime.

Assist with interviewing job applicants.

Mentors and supports the learning and development of shop employees, production support staff, and supervisory team

Evaluate early returns to work forms to determine if accommodations can be made.

Attend and participate in Production Status meetings, Lessons Learned sessions, and Production Team meetings

Provide coverage and support in the absence of the Senior Manager of Operations.

Meets with union representatives to deal with collective agreement issues.

Issue discipline when needed to employees.

Monitor tailgates on the shop floor from supervisors.

Conduct shop tours for visitors and clients.

Participate in employee recognition events.

Assists with the preparation of Tender Submittals, and the development of methods, procedures and other documentation required to implement new contracts.

Ensures required shop equipment is in place and is in good working condition

Works with Engineering and Production Planning regarding fabrication requirements

Ensures regular safety meetings are held by the Fabrication Supervisor to provide training and to document and correct safety related issues

Create operational and capital budget submissions

REQUIREMENTS:
Must hold a Diploma in Manufacturing, Business Administration or related field or a trade certification in one of the following trades: Automotive Service Technician 310S, Electrician- Construction and Maintenance 309A, Heavy Duty Equipment Technician 421A, Railway Car Technician 268R, Millwright Red Seal.

Minimum 5 years of recent related work experience including but not limited to:

managing and/or supervising a team of workers in a unionized environment

managing change within an organization

labour and employee relations and administration of collective agreements

managing commercial operations

project supervision

managing departmental resources/budget

Demonstrated leadership skills

Sound knowledge of the maintenance and repair of both passenger rail cars and freight rail cars

Excellent working knowledge of computers and the Microsoft suite of products

Effective communication skills (both written and verbal) including superior listening skills

Attention to detail

Flexibility to change priorities on short notice

Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, analytical and planning skills

Ability to multi-task

Commitment to company health and safety
