PUBLIC WORKS – WELDER

Essential Duties
Repairs equipment, machinery, vehicles and tools; assist in automotive repair work, Involves: assess design,
repair, and/or fabricate a variety of items;

Determines need of project/assignment;

Identifies, undertakes, recommends and/or oversees materials, supplies, equipment and/or parts purchase
and inventory;

Creates/repairs/replaces/installs repaired/fabricated items;

Provides fix and/or preventative maintenance services;

Tests and validates results;

Operates standard to specialized equipment utilized to perform duties;

Reads, understands, interprets and applies blue prints, schematics and similar documents;

Maintains/updates files, records, reports and logs;

Inspects and evaluates condition of construction equipment, structures and other items that require welding
repairs or reconstruction; makes appropriate repairs;

Measures dimensions of products or work pieces to verify conformance to specifications;

Performs tasks using cutting, welding and grinding equipment; utilizes various metals, including steel,
copper, aluminum and brass;

Designs layouts; determines needed materials; performs fabrication by cutting and welding to create parts,
tools and equipment;

Uses acetylene, electric welder or arc welding machines to heat, braze cut, resurface and fit ferrous and non-
ferrous metals;

Operates vehicles or motorized heavy equipment;

Travels to various county locations and perform related welding duties;

Installs new and/or enhanced equipment and/or systems. Involves: identifying/recommending/researching
costs, parts, supplies, equipment and material needs;

Gathers materials and supplies;

Coordinates service needs and schedules with other trades, vendors, contractors, departments and others;

Performs manual labor;

As assigned, substitutes for co-workers during temporary absences by performing delegated duties sufficient
to maintain continuity of normal operations;

Substitutes, if assigned, during temporary absences by performing delegated duties sufficient to maintain continuity of normal operations;

Commits self to providing excellent customer service and demonstrate commitment through cooperative team and individual efforts; and,

Creates a high quality work culture through participation in and emphasis on training and mentoring to
develop leadership, management, and technical skills in self and all employees, including safety-related
training and skills.

Other Important Duties*

As members of the County of El Paso Emergency Response System, all El Paso County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to train on emergency response and/or perform certain emergency services at the direction of their supervisor.

Minimum Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of: relevant federal, state and local laws, regulations, rules and ordinances, and City and departmental policies and procedures related to area of operation and safety including occupational hazards and safety precautions; the use of proper tools, equipment utilized, safety requirements, techniques, practices and principles of welding principles and practices of all types of welding and fabrication; types and blends of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and their compatibility to various welding rods and mig wires; raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture of goods; design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production or repair of materials; safety procedures.

Skill/Ability to: design and draft plans from blueprints; develop cost estimates for various projects; operate various welding and related equipment; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and superiors; work within internal and external environments with exposure to extreme weather and temperature conditions; keep a balanced position while moving your hand and arm; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and superiors; Pass a Criminal Background Investigation;
