Overview

Framatome is seeking a Welding Engineer in Kincardine, Canada. Under general supervision, this position performs welding engineering support including design specification, technical requirements, follow fabrication, assembly, and qualification testing of specialized components for maintenance and repair activities at commercial nuclear power plants. You will work in teams to develop custom, first-of-a-kind (FOAK) repair and plant modification solutions and to coordinate between component suppliers and analytical engineers to allow Framatome to deliver a turnkey solution. Displays technical competence requiring minimal direction from higher level engineering staff.


Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • ASME and AWS Code application and interpretations
  • Utilizing customized machine welding systems to perform complex field repairs and component replacement installations
  • Component fabrication
  • ASME Code procedure and personnel performance qualifications
  • Knowledge of CSA B51 and CSA N285 is essential
  • Strong experience with the application of ASME B&PV Code Sections II, III, V, VIII, IX and XI, ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3 in the area of welding
  • Experience with CWB Standards (CSA W59.1, W59.2, W47.1, W47.2, W178) applications for welding of structural steel and aluminum constructions
  • Developing and qualifying remote welding process
  • Develops welding techniques, procedures, and the selection of welding equipment in regards to problems involving the fabrication of all metals, utilizing a knowledge of production specifications, properties and characteristics of metals and metal alloys and sound engineering principles.
  • Prepares technical reports as a result of research and development and preventative maintenance investigations.
  • Design welding repairs (dissimilar metal welds, narrow groove welding, higher alloy based materials used in nuclear plants, low alloy steels, austenitic stainless steel, low alloy steel)
  • Specify applicable NDE for materials and welding.
  • Prepare and/or review specifications of welding operations in ITPs or Production Travelers
  • Code material procurement
  • Apply the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) processes to field repair/construction solutions
  • Adapting off-the-shelf and customized components for welding systems (off-the-shelf, modified off-the-shelf and first-of-a-kind designs)
  • Supporting resolution of welding questions from other Framatome organizations and Contacts personnel of Framatome, other companies, engineering personnel or clients to exchange ideas, information or other technical advice concerning welding matters.
  • Welding support for next generation reactor designs
  • Performs in house or site training of welding and QA/QC personnel.
  • May conduct certification for qualification of personnel with respect to national code requirements.
  • Ensures responsibilities and accountabilities are carried out in a safe manner in accordance with Framatome safety/policy procedures, ISO 45001 standards and OHSA regulations.
  • Supervises the inspection and testing of welded joints to assure welds meet QA standards, code requirements and customer specifications


All candidates must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for this opportunity. Candidates who exceed minimum qualifications may be considered for a higher level position.

  • BS Degree in Welding Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology, Metallurgy, Materials Science or related degree program with 1-3 (Eng II), 3-5 (Eng III), 5-7 (Eng IV) years engineering experience
  • Knowledge of CSA B51 and CSA N285 is essential
  • Strong experience with the application of ASME B&PV Code Sections II, III, V, VIII, IX and XI, ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3 in the area of welding
  • Experience with CWB Standards (CSA W59.1, W59.2, W47.1, W47.2, W178) applications for welding of structural steel and aluminum constructions
  • Professional Engineering License (P.Eng) required. Licensed in Ontario
  • Practical welding experience
  • Advanced knowledge of related engineering standards, techniques and criteria
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to comprehend and convey detailed technical data and technical writing
  • Ability to develop and maintain good interpersonal relationships
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills.
  • Engineering organizations may have additional qualification requirements with established criterion to demonstrate success including such items as training courses and/or qualification cards .
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to work on one project or multiple projects and prioritize work.
  • Strong computer skills (Word, Excel).
  • Demonstrated pro-active approach to problem identification and resolution
  • Demonstrated ability and attitude to learn a variety of new procedures, processes and tools, while maintaining various stages of production
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a high paced atmosphere.
  • Must have Ability to travel to plant sites in the spring and fall to support site outage work (1-3 weeks at a time) and occasional trips for walkdowns, training and/or meetings with customers


The following requirements are desired and will be used to differentiate all candidates who apply for this position.

  • Experience with AWS D1.1 and D1.2 is an asset
  • Knowledge of CSA N299 standards is an asset
  • MS Degree in Welding Engineering will also be considered in lie of or addition to work experience.
  • Co-op, Intern or work experience, preferably in the nuclear industry.
  • Competent in computer graphics, scheduling, etc. would be very beneficial.
  • A working knowledge in welding metallurgy in the area of nuclear pressure vessel materials .
  • Experience with field machine welding equipment and processes.
  • Experience with interpretation and application of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
  • Experience with interpretation and application of the CSA W59 and associated standards.
  • Knowledge of AWS Structural Welding Code.
  • Available to start work as soon as possible.
  • Well organized with result orientation.
  • Detail oriented with excellent decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willing to accept a long-term commitment and relocation.


Physical Requirements –
The employee must be able to:

  • Remain in a stationary position, walk, kneel and crouch.
  • Ability to operate a computer on a continual basis and communicate with various levels of the organization.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.


Travel:
Up to 10% travel. Candidate may support some travel to U.S. for seminars and/or training. Candidate may also travel to other Framatome Canada locations such as OPG plants.
