Overview
Duties and Responsibilities:
Use a cutting torch, grinder and stick welding equipment to remove, attach, heat and straightening parts
Using a computerized work order system, plan, schedule, and conduct regular preventative maintenance inspections of all equipment and work areas to identify hazards, clean equipment, and repair and maintain operational condition of facilities and equipment
Inspect, maintain, lubricate, repair, breakdown and clean up railcars according to FRA/AAR and/or Company guidelines and standards using precise measurements, checklists and procedures, providing concise written reports and allowing no cars to operate outside specifications
Have solid working knowledge of air brakes, hand brakes and cane car repair (all phases)
Ability to perform job functions such as:
heavy lifting, bending, climbing, pushing, pulling, walking, and working from heights and under equipment, etc.
repair and/or assist in all phases of repairs during breakdowns and line of road work
ability to perform proper troubleshooting, installation, maintenance and repair of equipment pertaining to the Locomotive/Cane Car Shop
use of oxygen/acetylene torch and related equipment
use and read tape measure
maintain written and computer generated documentation pertaining to the job
mount and dismount railcars following proper safety protocol
Ability and motivation to perform job functions safely, correctly, and efficiently, which include heavy lifting, climbing, squatting, working from heights and standing for extended periods
Demonstrate the ability to effectively read, interpret, and work from blueprints, layouts and other working drawings for the repair of equipment
Capable of working with railcar jacks and various lifting devices including proper rigging procedures
Abide by Company policies outlined in the Employee Handbook
Successfully participate in and complete all training sessions, safety classes, pre-shift meetings, or certifications related to the position
Demonstrate the physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job and be physically able to perform all phases of the work
Must be active and ready to assist during derailments and train breakdowns away from the Shop
Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities including the use of a computerized maintenance management system (SAP)
Perform mathematical calculations pertaining to the job
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum 3 years previous welding experience on heavy equipment, railroad equipment, etc.
Minimum 2 years previous experience as a railcar, locomotive or other related railroad mechanic role
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Must be able to read, write and speak the English language in order to comprehend instructions on the job, over the radio, and in the classroom, and to ensure personal and co-worker safety on the work site
New hires must pass pre-employment, and successfully complete any required training or orientation course.
Have knowledge of mechanical tools
Must have own mechanic tools pertaining to the job
Must have commitment and dedication to reducing equipment downtime and failures
Must have clear communication skills
Solid working ability utilizing desktop/laptop/thin client computers in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, etc. and other computer programs
Ability to work with others and or alone with minimum supervision
Ability to follow instructions and communicate information pertaining to the job
Ability to follow proper safety and housekeeping procedures pertaining to the area
Ability to work anywhere within the company and in variable/extreme weather conditions as well as outdoor/indoor environments
Must have strong analytical skills in determining why a component or structure failed and be able to accurately repair/correct the underlying cause to prevent repeat failures
Must successfully complete any required orientation, training, and continuing education courses
Must be able to work the posted schedule with shift work, call outs for breakdowns and overtime as necessary; this position may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required
Must have positive results from Company-designated tests designed to measure basic skills, job skills, mechanical aptitude and/or other interests, skills and characteristics
No active disciplinary action and a good work history
Must be capable of obtaining a forklift certification within 30 days
Must have and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license Class E or above
Must pass a mechanical aptitude test pertaining to cane car repair and terminology with a minimum score of 75%
Must be able to read and understand the AAR field manual, publications and apply required gauges
Must be willing and able to successfully work in a team work environment
Must be able to perform Single Care Air Brake Test and receive AAR S486 Certification
Must be able to read and understand the Code of Federal Regulations parts 215, 231 and 232
Must be TOST/Ramsay Test qualified, be able to pass the 6G welding test and successfully complete a welding sample prior to job award

Working Conditions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee works and drives in outside weather conditions on a regular basis.
Working conditions may be rainy, hot, humid, dusty, foggy etc. depending on the weather and may be at night time
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud
Duties of this job are also performed in an office and shop environment
Exposed to heights of up to 40 feet and rapidly changing temperatures, including extreme heat and other weather conditions
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit
The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to handle and/or move various objects, tools and/or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, talk, hear, and see
Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Visibility must extend to 62’ and beyond.
Ability to move or handle various items generally weighing between 0-75 pounds. Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
Prolonged kneeling, standing, and looking up. Incumbent is required to regularly climb stairs and ladders, and will perform overhead work while standing, kneeling, or lying flat, and will constantly crawl, bend at the waist and reach overhead, occasionally lift, pull or carry up to 75 lbs., and walk on uneven ground containing trip hazards.
