Reporting to the Associate Dean, Midland Campus, this position provides technical support for machinery, equipment and tools, as well as, students by demonstrating and supervising the safe and efficient use of welding, tooling and machinery. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

Trouble shooting, repairing (which includes tear down and rebuild of equipment) or replacing a wide range of lab equipment; sourcing new equipment, locating suppliers and ordering parts and replacement stock

Designing, researching, analyzing, fabricating, constructing and testing new equipment as required

Performing preventative maintenance on machines

Calibrating precision measurement tools and maintaining a machine log book

Analyze new course content or changes to course projects to determine new material and hardware required

Leading assigned departmental capital equipment purchases by providing input and expertise to location of equipment (lab layout), and ensuring service requirements are met

Ensuring lab safety standards are met and followed (e.g. equipment meets all CSA safety legislative requirements)

Ordering, expediting and receiving machine parts, perishable tooling, hand tools, and cleaning products, etc.

Monitoring and giving technical support to student activities and part time staff;

Identifying and correcting unsafe working practices

Assisting professors to orient students with shop procedures: demonstrating, orienting and modelling the safe operation of new and existing equipment

Assisting students with technical reports, applied research and in setting up and performing labs; assisting students with tool selection and usage

Delivering equipment demonstrations and assisting with tours (ranging from primary and high school age students to school administrators to government officials)

Orientating and familiarizing new faculty on the operation of labs and the operation of equipment in the learning lab

Maintaining up-to-date inventory lists and monitoring budget for lab resources by tracking of materials and expenses associated with the Welding program, in concert with program coordinator

Working on special projects as required ensuring “lock out” and “tag out” policies

Preparing materials for student projects

Overseeing students cleaning the stations

Ensuring all equipment/machines are shut down at the end of the day

QUALIFICATIONS:
Successfully completed a one-year pre-apprenticeship trades certificate; or a Red Seal certificate as a General Welder or related trade

A minimum of two years’ experience in a role where duties included operating large and small power tools

Experience performing inventory control

Computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) to contact suppliers, order supplies online, liaise with faculty, and maintain records/expenditures

Communication skills (written and oral) to provide technical guidance and support in a clear concise professional manner

Organizational and time management skills with the ability to multi-task and respond to diverse and often conflicting demands

Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment

Ability to work non-traditional hours (days, evenings and weekends)
