Overview

Position Summary
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Custom Design & Fabrication Engineer will bring their skills, knowledge, and design ideas to life, supporting and owning key components of the process from conception to fabrication. This role will participate in a wide range of multi-disciplined customized projects such as but not limited to concrete foundations and structural steel design in a fast-paced environment.

Job Duties

  • Take a concept, design and draw it, communicate and ensure electronic files are current
  • Create shop drawings, communicating with the shop and project team members
  • Analyze and improve existing processes with a sharp eye for detail and “can do” attitude
  • Custom fabrication and design, including changes to drawings and design
  • Material take off and generation of bill of materials
  • Assist with rolling out drawings to production and support the project through the fabrication process
  • Create quotes (including custom quotes) using spreadsheets
  • Monitor budgeted materials and labour hours throughout the process to ensure profit
  • Learn, understand, and operate ESAB plasma cutter and nesting software
  • Ensure customer correspondence is handled in a timely manner (via email, phone call etc.)
  • Maintain tight deadlines by working efficiently
  • Communicate regularly with the office team
  • Ensure costing, quoting, and purchasing is accurate in order to achieve consistency
  • Purchasing materials, namely steel
  • Site measuring where required, ensuring project team is frequently updated on changes
  • Help resolve computer tech issues

Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with Solidworks
  • Proficiency in Inventor
  • Ability to create shop drawings from hand sketches
  • Familiarity with building and safety codes
  • Solid time management and ability to follow current established data storage processes
  • Keen eye for detail
  • Strong communicator, able to explain and support their ideas
  • Proficient planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to function with minimal supervision
