Description:

Assist a CV operator to operate a CV line with up to three extruders per extruder head, apply thermoset or thermoplastic strand shield, insulation, and insulation shield compound over copper or aluminum conductors and shields by method of extrusion as required by written specifications.

Tools and Equipment used:

Diagonal cutting pliers, crescent wrenches, hex key set, circumference tape, channel lock pliers, nut drivers, screwdriver, spatula, a one quart spray bottle, pay-off and take up equipment, arc welder cable cutters, and overhead cranes, black or yellow tubing cutters, oscillating cutting saw, band saw, air ratchet, torque wrench when assembling head, hydraulic and manual cutters, hydraulic and manual crimping tools, coarse and fine files, air drill.

Essential Functions:

Key Requirements:

  • Monitor extruder control panels and make required adjustments in accordance with written machine and processing parameters and verbal instructions from the CV helper, supervisor, and/or process engineer.
  • During change-over, make set up by manually removing, cleaning, and installing the extruder heads and bullet assemblies weighing up to 30 pounds with temperatures up to 350 degrees F in and around the extruder head.
  • During a changeover and shutdowns, remove and clean extruder heads and bump screws from extruders using a bumper bar weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • During start-ups, changeovers, and shutdowns, joining conductors of different sizes using copper tube splices or arc welders as required.
  • Make cut overs and roll out of full reels of insulated cable weighing up to 10,000 pounds.
  • Continuously walk and climb stairs while monitoring water levels, seals, etc. along the length of the CV line.
  • Climb fixed ladders up to access, clean and check filters and compounding hoppers.
  • Communicate with Supervisor, lead tech and/or CV Operator concerning the operation of the CV line via direct voice communication and/or a radio system.
  • Insure that assigned work areas are clean and in good state of housekeeping at all times.
  • Work rapidly for short periods while making set-up and changeover during periods of restricted operations due to operations involving returning a line to full production with minimal down time. Additionally to avoid compounding solidifying in extruders and extruder heads during changeover and shutdown operations.
  • Read, understand, and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Read work scrap tickets; maintain logs, job lot tickets, graphs, logs, schedules, raw material labels, and general product labels, etc.
  • Inspect, examine and observe for product and equipment defects.
  • Observe and read instruments, gauges, and dials to determine operating conditions.
  • Read and interpret specifications and product orders.
  • Prepare detailed reports and records listing production data, keeping inventory records, and operating logs.
  • Inspect, examine and observe for product and equipment defects.
  • Use simple arithmetic to include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Use measuring devices such as gauges, micrometers, rulers, calibrated steel tapes and calipers where reading and interpretation is required.
  • Operate hoists, cranes, power and non-power hand tools.
  • Read and understand the safety requirements for the job to include personal protective equipment, chemical exposures (right-to-know), machine guarding, noise protection, and ergonomics as it affects the safe operation of the equipment.
  • Perform additional assigned duties as per Department Manager and/or Supervisor request.

Working Conditions effecting key requirements:

This job is performed is almost exclusively indoors and on the mezzanine area. Due to exposures to extruders, curing tubes, and steam, persons in this job will be periodically exposed to temperatures, which exceed the ambient temperature of the plant. Noise exposure does not exceed 90 dba. Safety shoes, ear plugs, and safety glasses with side shields, gloves and arm protectors are required as part of the personal protective equipment.

Special Requirements:

Must be able to push or pull 100 pounds infrequently and pull up to 75 pounds and push up to 65 pounds routinely. Must be able to lift 50 pounds infrequently and routinely lift 25 pounds.

Personal Protective Equipment:

Safety glasses with side shields, ear plugs, and safety shoes are required in all production areas. The following additional personal protective equipment is required for this job, and must be used as appropriate: cotton/canvas gloves and leather palmed gloves, cut resistant gloves and sleeves, face shields, and hot mill gloves.
