About Academy

Academy is a well-established and fast-growing fabrication company with location in both Onoway and Edmonton, AB. We service a wide rage of industries which includes oil & gas, mining, and other heavy industrial sectors.

Job Purpose

The Welder is responsible for fusing metal components and other metal parts together for pipe fabrication while keeping up with the pace of production on the shop floor.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Displays a commitment to Academy’s safety program, values, and culture;
  • Reads specifications and WPS data sheets;
  • Fuse metal components using the SMAW, and FCAW, process;
  • Grind, stamp, cut and drill material;
  • Operate tools and equipment including overhead cranes, oxy-acetylene torches, gouging equipment and sub arc welding machines;
  • Examine welds to ensure that they met standards and blueprints;
  • Attend daily toolbox meetings;
  • Complete tasks with minimal NCR’s;
  • Properly and consistently follow established procedures;
  • Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment at all times;
  • Maintains good housekeeping in work area;
  • Report personal injuries, no matter how minor, and obtain medical attention as required;
  • Consistently follow and encourage shop rules;
  • Willing to work overtime when needed.

Requirements

Education

  • Journeyperson certificate or postsecondary diploma or degree in a related discipline;
  • Must have a valid CSTC-09 certification;
  • Must possess WHIMIS 2015 certification;
  • Must possess a valid CWB FCAW/SMAW ticket;

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience working in a fabrication shop;
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license;
  • English language fluency is required;
  • Demonstrated experience implementing a strong safety culture by application of health, safety, and environment principles and legislation;
  • In-depth knowledge of and experience in construction industry; including building materials, construction methods, specifications, safety and environmental principles, and procedures;
  • Ability to coordinate multiple scopes of a construction project, including monitoring, and coordinating our trade partners with the construction schedule;

Skills

  • Strong verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to understand construction codes (i.e. CSA) to determine ability for Academy to complete the work;
  • Service orientation and ability to work effectively with a team environment;
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills;
  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to think quickly in high stress situations;
  • Capable of maintaining composure in fast paced environment.
