Overview
The Living Architecture Systems Group (LASG) and Philip Beesley Studio Inc. (PBSI) are seeking a Digital Fabrication and Production Design Manager for immediate hire. The qualified candidate has exceptional organization and planning skills and a degree in architecture or related discipline. The Digital Fabrication and Production Design Manager will be responsible for creative production, equipment, and related logistics at the PBSI/LASG Studio in Toronto’s West End. This position would especially suit a highly creative individual skilled in digital fabrication, visual art, and sculpture methods, who is interested in growing and exploring within a small central team that leads collaborative international projects.
The Production Manager would directly oversee fabrication and production activities and facilities and participate in on-site installation. The Digital Fabrication and Production Design Manager would interact with staff, students, and other technicians working at the Studio, and would occasionally, during periods of intense production, lead a team of short-term/casual assistants.
About the Studio
The LASG is a 140-partner research group that explores the boundaries of responsive architectural systems. Philip Beesley Studio Inc. is an international art practice with multiple collaborations in sculpture and fashion. PBSI works in partnership with the LASG. The LASG is supported by a multi-year Partnership Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and by a series of commissions by galleries and museums. The group includes academic, institutional, and industrial partners organized in 6 Research Streams: Scaffolds, Synthetic Cognition, Metabolism, Human Experience, Interdisciplinary Methods, and Theory. Each Stream is coordinated by leading academic faculty from Canada and abroad.
The Studio team typically undertakes numerous research and physical prototyping activities throughout the year. Activities and projects range in scale from small sculptures to large museum and public art installations, and often include collaboration with LASG partners. Versatile craft in multiple mixed media are involved.
Responsibilities
- Oversee fabrication using CAD/CAM; studio facilities include: [Digital]: metal and non-metal laser cutting, resin and fused filament 3d printing, CNC milling, abrasive waterjet cutting [Traditional] Manual and powered wood and metal shop machinery
- Maintain (and repair as necessary) digital fabrication and traditional workshop equipment
- Establish and maintain health and safety protocols related to workshop and production facility
- Establish and maintain organization and cleanliness standards within production facility
- Maintain studio stock of materials and supplies related to production facility, including inventory, sourcing, and purchasing
- Cultivate and maintain industry and supplier relationships and partnerships
- Develop and implement training programs for machinery operations
- In consultation with project lead, create and maintain production tracking suite of documents (Google Sheets) for each project based on design models created by design team (Rhino)
- In consultation with project lead and studio executive team, maintain balance of production schedule with project deadlines
- Create detailed production schedules based on machining time,
- Oversee a team of short-term/casual assistants for the assembly and pre-fabrication of sculpture components
Skills and Qualifications:
- Degree in architecture or related discipline
- Exceptional planning skills, organization, and time management
- Ability to take initiative
- Ability to work independently and within a small team
- Experience in prototyping and making
- Global knowledge of manufacturing processes
- Proficiency in digital design software: (Essential: Rhino, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite), (Preferred: Fusion360, Grasshopper)
- Basic computer programming and coding knowledge
- In depth knowledge of digital fabrication equipment, including laser cutters, 3d printers, waterjet, CNC, and others
Additional Information
This position may include periods of expenses-paid domestic and/or international travel and participation in public projects. While this work is generally completed during normal working hours, on-site work schedules include paid overtime.
