Position Overview:

The Fabricator/Welder – Prototype Fabrication Shop will provide specialized services within the Integrated Product Development Engineering Shops pertaining to the manufacture of sheet metal parts and weldments for prototype and production parts, assemblies and vehicles.

  • Maintain a record of parts/materials pertaining to buildup activities. Make notes necessary to report print/installation errors to design responsible engineer;
  • Perform welding, soldering, brazing, or riveting operations on engineering material such as aluminum, bronze, cast iron, steel and armor plating as required to successfully complete manufacturing activities on all types of materials including but not limited to engineering production parts, die castings, templates, jigs and fixtures. Positions will also weld shafts, cams spindles, hubs, facility machinery and bushings on trucks, trailers, etc.
  • Assist in fabricating, shaping, grinding, riveting and welding sheet metal parts, weldments and assemblies necessary to mount components to engines and vehicles
  • Read blueprints to understand engineering design necessary for the fabrication of parts, including material specifications, grain direction, GD&T standards and practices, dimensions and interference/clearance conditions. Build fixtures to aid in the manufacture or checking of parts and assemblies to meet blueprint specifications
  • Use computer systems to open part models to prepare parts for cutting and shaping through using laser, plasma or water jet technology
  • Maintain equipment and tools to keep work area orderly and clean. Maintain a safe and organized work environment adhering to Navistar and OSHA, and ISO 9001 standards
  • Provide management suggestions on ways to reduce costs through process improvements to improve efficiency and quality.
  • Interface with engineering and shop personnel to understand required parts delivery schedule and report deficiencies to management

Basic Requirements:

  • Associate’s degree and at least 3 year of Sheet Metal or Metal Fabrication experience

OR

  • At least 5 years of Sheet Metal or Metal Fabrication experience

Additional Requirements:

  • Qualified candidates, excluding current Navistar employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. Navistar does not anticipate providing employment related work sponsorship for this position (e.g., H-1B status)

Desired Skills:

  • Journeyman card as a welder or sheet metal is a plus
  • Previous experience involving truck and engine assembly, repair, and fabrication prototype parts.
  • Welding fabrication with Tig, Mig, Stick, Oxy-Acetylene Welding skills & plasma cutting.
  • Ability to read blueprints and understand engineering drawings
  • Ability to use laser, plasma or water jet technology for cutting and shaping parts
  • Evidence of excellent work history, including exemplary attendance, safety and job performance.
