Conducts equipment repair and may fabricate sewer plant, water plants, city wide pumping stations, and/or work vehicles parts and components. The incumbent works with considerable independence due to the specialized nature of this work.

This is skilled journeyman level welding work of average difficulty in the design, layout, fabrication and repair of metal parts, tools and equipment, such as hoist beams and supports; machinery pump mountings; structural walkways and columns. Performs routine maintenance on equipment.

This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by Teamsters Local Union769 and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. May perform welding operations, such as; fences, gates and latches

May also perform equipment repair and fabrication of pump station parts and components for routine maintenance

May set up equipment and welds parts using methods such as shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) stick, gas metal arc welding (MIG/GMAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW/TIG), or brazing

May repair damaged work vehicles and machines

May fabricate and assemble work according to layouts, blueprints, and work orders; fabricates custom field tools

May utilize various equipment to bend pipes and fabricate handrails and streetlight components

Maintains shop inventory; supplies materials for field work

Performs job assessment, design, planning, material, and process selection

May weld on pipes and equipment related to potable water and wastewater components

Track and account for work completed, including purchases

May work on playground equipment

Performs related work as required

JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

High School Diploma, trade school certificate or G.E.D. from a recognized issuing agency including/or completion of welding trade school

Minimum of five (5) years of welding/fabricating experience

Possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Florida driver’s license within 30 days of hire

Special Requirements:
Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared emergency. The employee’s Department Head will determine who will be required to work.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The position involves heavy physical demands, such as exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Ability to climb ladders and work at heights up to 90 feet.

HOW TO APPLY/ VETERAN INFORMATION

Depending on the number of applicants and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: Evaluation of Training and Experience, Oral Interview, Written Examination, or other assessment method. Applicants must attain a minimum score of 70 in each part of the examination in order to qualify. All successful applicants may be required to take a medical examination and/or pass a drug screening prior to appointment.

An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes. To obtain veteran’s preference, candidates MUST submit a copy of separation papers and the City of Fort Lauderdale’s veteran’s preference claim form (J204) at time of application.
