Summary

Lays out, fits and welds together metal components of such products as pipelines, boilers, tanks, structural steel and vehicles.
Reads, studies and interprets job specifications, plans and blue prints. Uses basic math skills including geometry, trigonometry to make calculations for work. Can complete difficult job tasks according to job specifications with minimal or no supervision.

Essential Functions

1. Reads and studies layout, blueprints, diagram, work order and welding procedures to determine work to be done. May also receive oral instructions.
2. Plans work in logical sequence and determines tools/equipment needed.
3. Lays out, positions, aligns and fits components together.
4. Bolts, clamps and tack welds parts to secure in position for welding.
5. Obtains specified electrode and inserts into portable holder or threads electrode wire through portable welding gun.
6. Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope and pulse as specified.
7. Start power supply to produce electric current.
8. Strikes arc which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and joint edges.
9. Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead. This is judged by color of metal, sound of weld and size of molten puddle.
10. Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions and examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
11. Manually applies filler rod to supply weld metal.
12. Cleans or degreases weld joint or work piece using wire brush, grinder or chemical bath.
13. Chips off excess weld, slag, spatter.
14. Preheats work piece using torch or heating furnace.
15. Repairs products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping and reassembling parts.

Position Requirements

Required Education and Experience:

  • Minimum Four years’ experience in welding with SMAW, GTAW, and or Flux Core process.
  • Or 2 yrs. + 2 yrs. ABC or equivalent training.
  • Must pass required welding test as required by the specific job site.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • High School or GED preferred but not required.
  • Trade School program preferred but not required.
