Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is accountable for providing support to skilled craft workers at marine project locations for Orion Marine Construction Gulf Coast. Incumbents are responsible for performing a variety of tasks for Welders, Pipefitters/Carpenters and other skilled workers. Typically, they will work closely with a Barge Foreman, Crane Operator, Boat Captain, Welders, Laborers, and other site field personnel.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Works as assigned by the Barge Foreman to ensure the successful completion of on-going or new marine construction projects.

Assists skilled craft workers such as Welders, Pipefitters/Carpenters or other skilled craft workers in performing their assigned duties.

Complies with all applicable laws, regulations and Company policies and procedures, and is subject to appropriate disciplinary action (including dismissal) for failure to do so.

Reports any and all violations of applicable laws, regulations or Company policies and procedures promptly, and is subject to appropriate disciplinary action (including dismissal) for failure to do so.

Performs other related administrative and technical duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision (such as certification training, safety training, procedure review, etc.).

Welders Duties

Moves work pieces, tools and supplies, manually or by hand truck.

Lifts, moves, holds or clamps work pieces to table, into jogs, or into position as directed, either manually or by using hoist, pry bars, wrenches, hammer or wedges.

Cleans work pieces to remove impurities, such as slag, rust, and grease using wire brush, portable grinder, hand scraper or chemical solutions.

Connects hoses from hand torch to oxygen and fuel gas cylinders or connects cables from power source to electrode holder and work piece or fixture.

Starts gasoline engines to activate electric generators.

Removes, tags and moves finished work.

Attaches grappling equipment to objects prior to movement by crane.

Performs other related duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision.

Pipefitter / Carpenter Duties

Bolts, nails, aligns and blocks up under forms.

Signals operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications.

Levels earth to fine grade specifications using pick and shovel.

Mixes concrete using portable mixer.

Smooth and finish freshly poured cement or concrete using float, trowel or screed.

Position, joint, align and seal pipe sections.

Erect scaffolding, shoring and braces.

Mop, brush or spread paints or bituminous compounds over surfaces for protection.

Spray materials such as water, sand, steam, vinyl, paint or stucco through hose to clean coat or seal surfaces.

Performs various tasks involving dexterous use of hands and tools, such as demolishing buildings, sawing limber, dismantling forms, removing projection from concrete, mounting pipe hangers and cutting and attaching insulation material.

General

Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of one (1) year construction or craft worker helper field experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities to perform the job is required. Previous experience in Welding, Pipefitting, Piledriving or Carpentry is desirable. The incumbent must:

Be able to communicate effectively and work well with other employees.

Be able to understand and follow specific directions from supervision.

Be able to submit to and successfully complete any specific safety or job training that may be required by the customer, the job and/or the contract with client.

Have the ability to work without close supervision.

Be capable of working within standards of accuracy as dictated by the customer.

The Company expects and requires incumbent and each of its other employees to observe and fulfill the above and all other safety responsibilities and actively work toward maintaining a safe workplace. Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

This individual must also have the ability to identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management, including corporate.

The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel. Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise.

In addition, Laborers must also be capable of:
Walking, stepping, climbing or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, and normally involves physically getting onto and off of work barges, boats, vessels, or dock facilities of varying heights and access parameters

Standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing or sitting for long periods of time

Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work

Climbing vertical ladders to heights of 40’-50’

Working in confined spaces and at elevated heights

Lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs. as required

Adapting to extreme temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure

Remaining calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident
