In this role, you will support the creation of riveting programming and items that reflect historic blacksmithing traditions in two of our historic eras, 1846 and 1885, to bring your passion and knowledge to the public. With a focus on the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:
Engage visitors with the historic skill of blacksmithing and historical narrative as it relates to Edmonton within two of our historical eras, 1846 era and 1885 era
Engage and interact with the visiting public using a variety of methods, including conversation, hands-on activities, and demonstrations of historic/Traditional skills
Participate in, assist and lead a variety of interpretive programs, including historical talks, special event activities, outreach, media engagements, public events, pre-registered groups and more
Assist in the maintenance and creation of program supplies and/or limited building maintenance pieces
Work in a mentorship capacity with Interpreters to research, teach skills, develop stories and activities, and advise accompanying safety protocols
Other related duties as required
Qualifications :
Completion of the Grade 10 or higher or equivalent
Minimum 5 years of experience in blacksmithing, metalsmithing, tinsmithing or related field
Experience working independently as well as with a team of internal staff and volunteers
Demonstrated ability or knowledge in blacksmithing practices
Knowledge of Western Canadian history would be an asset
Highly developed and demonstrable verbal and written communication abilities and interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively deal with the public
Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform the assigned tasks and duties of the position, including lifting up to 50 lbs and working outdoors in all weather and environmental conditions with the presence of allergens like bees, hay and animals
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of blacksmithing
Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Certificates are required prior to employment
Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
Hire is dependent on Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
Successful candidates must be willing to sign a media consent form in accordance with City policy and participate in media events

Hours of Work: Up to 35 hours per week. Successful candidates must be available to work weekends, holidays and evenings as required.
