Industrial Fiberglass Fabricator Position

Structural Composite Technologies Ltd (SCT), located in Winnipeg Manitoba is Western Canada’s largest manufacturer of custom-engineered industrial fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) products for the mining, oil and gas, pulp and paper, water treatment, chemical processing, potable water extraction and electrical utility sectors. SCT is currently seeking enthusiastic and reliable fulltime fibreglass composite fabricators to join our manufacturing team!

The following are general duties performed by an entry-level fiberglass fabricator:

  • Cleaning and general shop upkeep
  • Cutting and kitting glass fabrics
  • Blending resin with catalyst(s) and other additives
  • Inspect, clean and preparing molds including minor damage repairs prior to lamination
  • Manual fibreglass layup with brushes, rollers, squeegees and other hand tools on mold surfaces (contact molding) in accordance with layups on engineering drawings
  • Trimming excess material from molds using hand tools such as shears and trimming knives
  • Trim, grind and sand finished fiberglass parts using pneumatic and electric power tools
  • Repair damaged or non-conforming fiberglass parts
  • Manual application of exterior surface gelcoat

More technical tasks that may be assigned to those displaying an inclined aptitude, these include:

  • Locating and securing fittings, nozzles, lugs, sub-assemblies, etc. to primary structure
  • Visual defect and dimensional conformance inspection of finished products
  • Resin application via spray gun
  • FRP “chop” application with fibreglass chopping gun (spray-up molding)
  • Manufacturing of components via closed-molded processing (resin transfer molding)

Qualities of an ideal candidate to join our manufacturing team include:

  • Follows direction, is self-motivated and has a drive to learn
  • Has a strong work ethic with an attention to detail
  • Is not deterred by moderate manual labour
  • Enjoys working in groups and excels in a team environment
  • Performs duties strictly in accordance with SCT Safety, Quality and Manufacturing Procedures
  • Is comfortable reading engineering schematics and performing simple mathematical operations
  • Previous fibreglass manufacturing experience is considered an asset (but not required)
  • Able and willing to travel (often outside of Manitoba) to job sites (but not required)
  • Able and willing to work in shifts (days and evenings)
  • Takes pride in his or her work!
