Industrial Mechanic performs entry maintenance, fabrication, overhaul and repair of mechanical equipment located within a water, wastewater, or reclaimed treatment sewer pump station or LPSS facilities. Assists and/or leads crews in a broad range of preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, and new equipment installations, and assists with planning and estimating costs of maintenance work.

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and

Four years of experience in mechanical maintenance and repair/replacement of water and waste water related equipment; and

Possession of a valid Driver License.

OR

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-specific competencies noted above; and

Possession of a valid Driver License.

Medium work – Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

May require shift work which will include working nights, weekends, and holidays as well as working extended hours during times of emergency.

Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below:

  • Reviews system designs, specifications, and products, attends pre-construction meetings, and recommends changes in water/wastewater/reclaim facilities mechanical systems.
  • Monitors, reviews and validates work practices for quality control assurance of wastewater processes and to ensure adherence to safety standards in operation of water/wastewater/reclaim water facilities.
  • Trouble-shoots problems and recommends corrective actions based on skilled knowledge of mechanical repair practices.
  • Inputs and gathers data from Supervisory Control Data Acquisition system (SCADA), and Comprehensive Asset Management System (CAMS).
  • Runs reports as necessary.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and corrective repair work on water/wastewater/reclaim facilities and equipment.
  • Fabricates and machines repair parts for equipment, with the ability to weld steel, brass, and aluminum.
  • Operates lathes, mill/drill presses, welder and various other metal working power tools as needed.
  • May direct and/or oversee the work of other employees, provide instruction, guidance, and training as required.
  • Locates leaks, and detects defects in water/wastewater/reclaim equipment in conformance to established plans and standards.
  • Expected to temporarily perform duties outside normal classification in the event of a declared emergency.
  • Operates a personal computer and work in software programs associated with job.
  • Completes various maintenance jobs on buildings and grounds.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Knowledge of the maintenance and repair of machinery and related mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of the water, reclaim, wastewater treatment systems and sewer pump/lift stations and low pressure sewer systems.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of the water/wastewater/reclaim facilities operating equipment.
  • Knowledge of the principals of hydraulics, electricity, combustion, and standard safety practices.
  • Knowledge on the principles and practices of odor control and/or disinfection processes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose equipment problems to determine the proper remedial action to be taken, and to make the necessary repairs to equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read piping and electrical diagrams, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to enter confined space areas such as wet wells, tanks, manholes, vaults, pits etc.
  • Ability to perform predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance on assigned equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to estimate time, materials, and equipment required for assigned jobs; may requisition materials as required and/or instructed.
  • Ability and willingness to respond to emergency situations such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and other natural and/or unnatural crises to provide for public health and safety.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime, rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to use a computer and related software.
  • Ability to operate a fork lift, backhoe, boom/bucket truck or other heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
Some of positions in this job classification may require:

  • Possession a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement will be required for positions associated with LPPS and Pump Stations.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain an appropriate level Florida wastewater collections license.
  • A passing score on a math and technical comprehension test.

  • Health Plan: The County pays towards health insurance premiums for all employees. Employees can select from two (2) healthcare plan options. Coverage is effective the first of the month following thirty (30) days of employment.

  • Vision Care: Employees and their dependents are eligible to enroll in the vision coverage. Co-payment coverage includes exams, lens and frame, as well as an allowable contact lens expense. Coverage is effective the first of the month following thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Employee Assistance Program: This program provides all employees and family members with professional, confidential counseling sessions. All employees and dependents are afforded up to six (6) free visits per Plan year. Coverage begins on the first day of employment.
  • Tuition Reimbursement: Employees may be reimbursed up to $1,000 (undergraduate), $2000 (graduate) per fiscal year for classes at an accredited college or university for courses that enhance your ability to perform your current job duties.
  • Holidays: Employees receive up to twelve (12) paid holidays per year.
