Overview

Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS–related work, Seaspan Shipyards is leading the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians.

As a Welding and Materials Testing Engineer, you will be responsible for Mechanical testing for development of welding procedures, supporting technical department and production team, conducting failure analysis on materials and welding related issues, etc. This internship will provide exposure to weld and material testing in one of a kind metallurgical testing lab, with a team of professional engineers in one of the largest shipbuilding programs of our time.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver, V7P 2R2

What you’ll do:
Assist in preparation of Welding and Material Specimens.

Support performing tests in Metallurgical Laboratory.

Support Welding Quality Management System (WQMS) reports

Assist in reviewing/organizing Working Instructions and Procedures.

Assist in Calibration Process.

Work on projects assigned by Welding Engineering and Welding Quality Senior Manager

What you’ll bring:
Enrolled in the 2nd or 3rd year of a Metallurgical/Materials Engineer or Welding Technologist program. Students must also have a strong curiosity about Project Management/Contracts.

Good knowledge of different Mechanical Testing for Materials and Welds

Familiar with Shipbuilding Welding processes and national/international welding codes, rules, and standards.

Innovative thinking skills, with the tenacity to get to the source of truth

Outstanding integrity and honesty in all situations

Strong communication, interpersonal and organization skills

Excellent knowledge of the English language, verbal and written

Outstanding MS office skills
