PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Jr. Welding Development Student will play a key role in the development, qualification and ongoing support of welding activities required for the FCFR project. All welding procedures shall be qualified in compliance with applicable ASME Codes and Bruce Power Technical Specification requirements pertaining to the FCFR project.

The Jr. Welding Development Student will directly assist the Welding Engineers & Specialists who are the Technical Leads for the FCFR welding program. This Co-Op position is suitable for an Engineering or Technologist student interested in pursuing a career in Weld Engineering and Technology.

The candidate will get hands on exposure to the development and analysis of welds, welding equipment, tooling, and related production strategies and training efforts. There will also be a strong exposure to the ongoing production activities related to encountered issues and related problem solving.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist lead welding Engineers in developing, troubleshooting, designing, testing and training with various types of welding processes and pieces of equipment.
  • Preparation of detailed procedures to be used for the control of mechanized Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW).
  • Recording and monitoring of essential welding parameters during weld development and qualification.
  • Assist with identification of Tooling or Consumable related issues during the welding development stage.
  • Preparation of Technical Reports related to the FCFR Welding Program.
  • Development of Training Specifications and Procedures for Welders.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Currently enrolled in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering or Engineering Technology at a recognized University or College.
  • Familiar with welding principles is preferred.
  • Familiar with welding robotics or comparable semi-automated and mechanized processes.
  • Ability to map processes and write procedures.
  • Results oriented, takes ownership of tasks assigned.
  • Familiar with CANDU Reactor fundamentals is an asset.
  • Practices a strong safety culture.
  • Strong problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills (typical MS suite programs).
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of basic machine design.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • The Jr. Engineer/Jr. Welding Technologist shall expect to work in both an office and a shop environment. The split is anticipated to be about 70% office and 30% hands on shop work.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Due to the nature of work conducted by Aecon, mandated nuclear export controls requirements must be met for employment.
  • Our background check process includes a full security check and clearance process as well as reference checks. The security clearance process includes a comprehensive list of previous residences, employment, education and other pertinent information. Those with a valid Bruce Power security clearance are strongly preferred.

LOCATION AND TRANSPORTATION

  • This role will be located primarily at the Aecon Nuclear head office in Cambridge, ON, although periodic travel to the Shoreline on-site location in Kincardine, ON may be required. The candidate shall have access to a personal vehicle and expenses incurred for travel between Cambridge and Kincardine will be able to be expensed.
