Job Description

The Materials, Welding, and Chemistry Engineering Branch is the SNC-Lavalin functional design centre in the area of materials, welding, and chemistry engineering providing support and leading various projects including the Darlington Retube and Feeder Replacement Project, Bruce Major Component Project, and various CANDU Services Projects.

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director of Reactor Components and Mechanical Engineering Division, the Materials, Welding, and Chemistry Engineering Branch Manager is responsible for:

  • Providing the lead role or supporting the design and qualification of domestic and international CANDU reactors, retube projects, and new reactor design in the areas of materials engineering, chemistry, engineering review of metallurgical laboratory testing results including pre-production weld qualification.
  • Provide technical expertise on code and standard requirements, material selection and specification, fabrication, and chemistry and material behaviour under CANDU reactor conditions for various components of the reactor.
  • Provide services and support to utilities operating CANDU stations to assist in addressing items relevant to operation, life management, and maintenance for various components of the nuclear generating station.
  • Ensuring that the activities are executed in accordance with the specified requirements including review and endorsement of the technical content of the deliverables, verification and ensuring the high-quality of the deliverables, on time and within budget delivery of the deliverables, and approval of the deliverables.
  • Interfacing with internal and external customers and stakeholders to establish the priorities in information and controls, and initiating and approving work proposals for various projects.
  • Recruiting, training, developing, motivating, and evaluating the performance of staff.
  • Working with the Reactor Components and Mechanical Engineering Management team to plan the work in the branch, ensuring resource availability, allocating resources, assigning tasks and progress reporting against deliverables.
  • Provide strong leadership within the branch staff, across the company, and within the industry on aspects related to materials, welding, and chemistry engineering.
  • Ensure that as a functional group, an appropriate combination of skills and experience is maintained within the group to be able to provide technical leadership and specialized expertise as required to support the branch mandate and projects.

Qualifications:

  • Relevant Bachelors Degree, with a minimum of 8 years technical experience in the area of materials, welding, chemistry and/or mechanical engineering.
  • An overall understanding of the CANDU reactor design.
  • Demonstrated skills in the management/lead of technical projects, and leadership of a highly technical group.
  • Demonstrated leadership and people skills to interact with external clients and external organizations, to communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrated leadership and people skills to lead a team in the area of materials, welding, and chemistry engineering to accomplish its goals and deliverables.
  • Ability to resolve technical issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and presentation skills.
  • Foster working relationships with internal and external clients and stakeholders and maintain creditability and trust via successful delivery of committments.
  • Understanding of quality assurance manuals and procedures.
