DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Fleet Management Department is seeking candidates who can perform scheduled and unscheduled body/unibody and frame, repairs, including modifications and fabrication on equipment and related services to various types of vehicular equipment. Welds and brazes all ferrous and non ferrous metals. Uses Mig welder on all metals and aluminum. Uses plastic welder and UniSpotter. Uses all body repair tools including sanders, buffers and door skin tools. Performs all phases of frame diagnosis and repairs using electronic measuring system and unibody & chassis dimension and specification charts. Uses frame machine and floor system pulling towers. Refurbishes units including complete interior disassembling, upholstery and detailing to return unit to like new condition. Prepares and paints vehicles using HVLP technology. Uses all related safety gear/equipment. Performs estimates. Personally repairs or directs repair of vehicles and determines timeliness, efficiency and best practice procedures of repairs by holding to industry standard flat rates and quality controls. May serve as shop lead man and train less skilled mechanics. Keeps track of repair times electronically in M5 and orders parts as needed. Stays current on new technology.

MUST FURNISH OWN TOOLS AND SAFETY SHOES.

ADDITIONAL SALARY INCENTIVES

ASE/EVT CERTIFICATION PAY (UP TO $5,200 ANNUALLY)

EVENING/NIGHT SHIFT INCENTIVE PAY (UP TO $3,000 ANNUALLY)

WORKING CONDITIONS

There is routine exposure to significant levels of heat, cold moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts bruises and minor burns.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires an Associate’s degree in Automotive Technology or certification/licensing in an automotive technology program of over eighteen months (i.e., NIASE).

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Three years of automotive maintenance and repair experience is required. Technical automotive experience may be substituted for the above education requirement on a year-foryear basis.

MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Requires a valid Texas driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving.

Requires a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) except in the Police and Fire Departments. In the Fire Department, a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and/or a State of Texas Inspection License are preferred. Departments with a CDL training program may require a position to obtain an A or B CDL within 90 days of entering the position. In the Fire Department, a State of Inspection License may be required.

PREFERENCES

Applicants with ASE Master Certification in body repair or ICar. Aluminum body substructure repair experience in ambulance modules. Fire Apparatus and general fiberglass body repair.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
