SCHEDULE

Monday – Friday 6:30am – 3:00pm

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs difficult skilled and intermediate technical work supervising the maintenance, repair and preparation of parks/athletic fields and related facilities or in the performance of specialized field applications and special events; performs difficult semiskilled and intermediate skilled work in the regular operation of equipment used in the application of pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. Supervision is exercised over a large crew of unskilled, semiskilled, and skilled workers.

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:
In coordination with the Athletics Section/District Supervisor (Athletic Fields) or a superior, schedules work projects and assigns staff and equipment; Responsible for turf and clay repairs, renovations, and vendor projects;

Operates spray equipment in the application of pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers and other chemicals to municipal parks and public building site grounds in accordance with the federal and state laws; Applies chemicals to athletic fields by using hand held equipment, spray vehicles, backpack sprayers, motorized and push spreaders.

Instructs and demonstrates proper operation and use of tools and equipment used in athletic field maintenance;

Coordinates the use of available equipment, materials, and personnel to obtain maximum effectiveness and economy;

Prepares bid specifications, purchases and maintains inventory of equipment and supplies;

May supervise assigned areas such as landscaping or building maintenance.

RELATED TASKS:
Assists with general parks maintenance, mowing or other activities as required; Participates in employee evaluations; assists with budget preparation and monitoring; Coordinates irrigation system maintenance repairs with assigned Irrigation Technician; Responsible for cleaning and maintaining the equipment used to apply pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers and other chemicals; Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Must possess a thorough knowledge of weeds, fungus, pests, and diseases found in South Florida turf and be able to determine the appropriate pesticides, insecticides, herbicides or fungicides to be used to treat or eradicate them; ability to use computer to complete required paperwork; thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of operating spraying equipment; thorough knowledge of the techniques and methods used in applying pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of spray equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Thorough knowledge of the methods and practices of athletic field maintenance and the equipment and tools used in the repair, maintenance and preparation of parks/athletic fields and related facilities; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work and related equipment operation; skill in the use of the equipment and tools of the trade; ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; ability to use a computer to complete required paperwork; ability to prepare and maintain records; ability to prepare plans and detailed reports; ability to plan and supervise the work of

skilled, semiskilled, and unskilled workers; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other departmental staff, contractors, and the general public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associate degree from an accredited junior college or any equivalent combination of education and experience, plus considerable experience in park, athletic field or general maintenance work and experience in applications of pesticides and herbicides on motorized spray equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to obtain a State of Florida Ornamental & Turf Public Applicator License within three (3) months of employment. Position may require other special licenses or certificates. Possession of a valid State of Florida Class “E” driver’s license with no more than six (6) points in the last three (3) years.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to lift, carry and push articles weighing up to 75 lbs. Must be able to wear hard hat/helmet, safety glasses,

goggles, respirator, safety shoes/boots, hearing protectors, chain saw chaps, welder’s helmet, face shield, safety harness, safety vest and gloves. Exposure to extreme temperatures, animals/insects, electrical hazards, confined spaces, heights, noise, vibration, dust, vapors, fumes, mist, smoke, toxic metals, poisons, irritants, and moving mechanical parts.
