The incumbent provides assistance to faculty by overseeing the use of facilities including contributing to the development of instructional plans for teaching practical skills based on established learning objectives; demonstrating skills to students and completing remedial instructions for those students who require further assistance in mastering the practical skills. The incumbent will also be responsible for the setup, operation and maintenance of a wide variety of machines and will provide technical support in matters of a complex nature.
Hours of work will be 7 hours per week with opportunity for up to 24 hours per week, across all Academic semesters between the hours of 8:00am to 10:00pm Monday – Sunday. This is a “less than 12 months” position with an expected annual layoff of one month (December-January).
Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. This position will work on-site 5 days per week at either the Doon Campus located at 299 Doon Valley Dr, Kitchener or the Guelph Campus located at 460 Speedvale Ave W, Guelph.
Responsibilities:
Practical skills along with remedial instruction to students
Procedures used with equipment and capabilities of equipment to faculty and students
The incumbent functions as a lead hand providing guidance and direction to part-time employees and student workers on a daily basis, based on shop needs, overseeing the overall activity and flow in the shop.
The incumbent assists faculty in maintaining facilities and providing input on course content and developing instructions plans to teach the practical skills based on established learning objectives
Evaluates equipment and supplies prior to ordering. Prepares purchase requisitions for student supplies and machine parts. Maintains inventory of all supplies and operating equipment
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Licensed journeyperson holding valid C of Q in Welder or Metal Fabricator trades
Minimum of 5 years practical experience with technical specialization
Lockout/Tag out Training, Tow Motor Training
Must be flexible and organized
Must possess good human relations skills
Communication and interpersonal skills
Strong leadership and problem-solving skills
Ability to explain ideas and concepts thoroughly to students
Ability to accommodate varying start and end times according to timetable – will not exceed 7 hours per day
