SCOPE:

Lays out, fits and welds a large variety of metal pipe including welding of exotic metals. Will use mainly GMAW and FCAW welding equipment to join items made of carbon steel such as piping (stationary or on rollers), stainless steel and chrome. GTAW welding process is also used. Combo welders will be required to pass tests in GTAW(TIG), GMAW(MIG) and FCAW(FLUX-CORE).

Experience with Sub-Arc welding or the use of a Jimmy Jammer is a plus!

EDUCATION:

Must be able to read and understand safety instructions, signs and labels, be able to follow instructions both verbally and written, and pass a craft-specific Task Based Assessment.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of three (3) years as a Welder (Combination) in a pipe fabrication shop, or similar industrial plant construction or maintenance, performing the work described herein. Must be able to perform work within precise limits or standards of accuracy, make decisions based on measured criteria, read and understand drawings and specifications, visualize objects in three dimensions from flat drawings read, understand, and communicate safety instructions, signs and labels, be able to follow and communicate instructions, both verbally and written, and pass a craft-specific Task Based Assessment.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Selects equipment and plans layout, assembly and welding, applying knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal machining, weld shrinkage and welding techniques, lays out, positions, aligns and fits components together.

Bolts, clamps and tack-welds parts to secure in position for welding.

Sets up equipment and welds parts together using arc, gas-shielded arc, submerged arc or gas welding equipment.

May assemble parts by bolting and riveting.

May repair products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping and reassembling parts using cutting torch, straightening press and hand tools.

Use a variety of arc and gas welding equipment.

Obtains specified electrode and inserts into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.

Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope and pulse.

Starts power supply to produce electric current.

Strikes arc that generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and join edges of work piece.

Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead as judged from color of metal, sound of weld and size of molten puddle.

Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions.

Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.

May pre-heat work piece using hand torch.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to effectively verbally communicate directions from craft supervisors and respond to questions from clients, managers and fellow workers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Normal work environment will be construction sites within operating shops. This will require some exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, working near moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, and fumes.

COMMUNITY OF INTEREST

All shop employees may be required to serve as members of the Safety Committee.

There is cross training in the helper groups during the course of employment. Employees in one craft may be cross trained so they can continue working in a different craft.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must work easily and skillfully with hands, lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds, see well (either normally or with correction), hear well (either naturally or with correction) in order to recognize safety alarms and signals and the various sounds of danger associated with construction or maintenance projects, climb and maintain balance on high ladders and scaffolds, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl, maneuver in tight working quarters; and work outdoors in extreme weather conditions associated with shop facilities. Must be medically cleared for respirator usage. Must be able to wear properly fitting respirators.

A person’s weight and tools/equipment including clothing must comply with manufacturer’s specifications and/or restrictions related to use of ladders and/or fall protection equipment.
