Pipefitter/Plumber Leadhand

Location: Pinawa, Manitoba

Schedule: Four (4) – 10 hour days – Monday to Thursday

Job Summary

The Mechanical Maintainer – pipefitter/plumber Leadhand, reports to the Project Supervisor and is responsible for performing their work in an efficient and timely manner. The incumbent must adhere to industry standards for installation, repairs, and safety. Decisions on tasks performed by trades will be based on the Red Seal Occupational Analysis.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) employees perform all duties in accordance with established health and safety and regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (i.e. utilizing personal protective equipment as per safe work procedures). Notifies management or supervisor of all occurrences, injuries, illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm themselves, their co-workers or any other on the premises in a timely manner and in accordance with established reporting requirements.

Qualifications

Education

  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must have completed apprenticeship training or equivalent and be qualified as Steamfitter-Pipefitter / Plumber with an Interprovincial Red Seal ticket.

Experience

  • Must have three (3) years’ experience as a qualified Steamfitter-Pipefitter/Plumber.

Abilities and Skills

The role includes:

  • Ensuring tradespersons in their discipline have the tools, materials and equipment to safely complete their work;
  • Preparing time and material estimates for upcoming jobs;
  • Mentoring new staff and apprentices, and contributing to identification of training needs;
  • Managing time card entry for all trades in their discipline, and the welder(s);
  • Performing, or assisting with, work on all site piping systems, including torch cutting;
  • When required, initiate work requests and co-ordinates repairs with other trades, powerhouse, or design staff. The Lead hand is responsible for promoting work in accordance with all company safety and compliance programs, including good workplace housekeeping, and;
  • Must be familiar with responsibilities, as described in the Canada Labour Code Part II;
  • Coordinate; assign maintenance work requests (WR), execution and completion of established PM work load schedules increasing the WL Maintenance overall productivity;
  • Enhance safety culture and organizational excellence through leadership, accountability, communication and process improvement. Specifically, deliver the Whiteshell decommissioning mission safely, more efficiently and effectively;
  • Read and interpret blueprints, codes, drawings and specifications to determine the type and size of pipe and tools to use;
  • Make detailed sketches for pipe and equipment fabrication and installation;
  • Fabricate, lay out and assemble fittings, spools and supports;
  • Measure, cut, shape, thread, groove, bend and join pipes and related equipment such as valves and fittings;
  • Install equipment, supports, pipes, tubes, controls and accessories;
  • If necessary, modify structures to accommodate the pipes;
  • Test for leaks;
  • Carry out quality control checks on all work performed;
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair;
  • Install, examine, repair or replace:

o Brackets, clamps and other supports for pipes;
o Piping, controls and components of fuel burning equipment;
o Pneumatic, steam and hot water heating systems;
o Complete assemblies and components of boiler units;
o Low and high pressure heating systems;

  • Initiative and judgement to organize and maintain flow of work and accuracy of records;
  • Must be punctual, dependable and safety minded;
  • Detail oriented with the ability to meet deadlines;
  • Exceptional organizational skills, able to prioritize and time management is required;
  • Ability to understand detailed information is essential;
  • Demonstrates responsibility and is accountable for accurately handling the details associated with one’s work;
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and response with initiative;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and proven ability to maintain successful working relations at all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders; and
  • Highly motivated and able to work with minimal supervision;
  • Able to work extended hours and off normal work shifts to support project needs.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use and application of applicable codes, regulations, and by-laws;
  • Good comprehension skills to interpret drawings and code specifications;
  • Keep up-to-date with new developments in technology.
  • Work from drawings and sketches as required, able to provide material take-offs and labour estimates;
  • Read, interpret engineering drawings and weld to the engineering specifications as outlined;
  • Good planning and organizational abilities;
  • Effective communication skills;

  • Problem solving abilities to change installation techniques to on-site working conditions;
  • Experience in a wide variety of industrial work environments;
  • Physical agility necessary to perform all aspects of the work;
  • Physical stamina to stand for long periods of time, work in confined locations;
  • Strength and the ability to work at heights on construction and industrial sites;
  • Work on scaffolds, ladders and mobile lifts;
  • Eye-hand coordination and dexterity and their ability to plan and think sequentially as well as three-dimensionally;
  • Manual dexterity required to perform precision work;
  • Knowledge of metallurgy and the effectiveness of the equipment being used;
  • Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools; and, their ability to determine the most appropriate means of proceeding with the work;
  • Able to wear and work in protective clothing including respirators;
  • Mechanical ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment;
  • Determine how equipment operates by looking at a diagram or blueprint;
  • Maintains confidentiality in all matters.
