Role Summary:

The Apprentice plumber is an entry-level plumber working under the guidance of a more experienced tradesman. Apprentice plumbers perform many of the same tasks that veteran plumbers do, including installing new plumbing fixtures, unclogging plumbing systems, and repairing pipes. They may handle easier jobs on their own and act as a helper on more complex jobs. Applicants well suited to becoming apprentice plumbers are well organized and detail-oriented, are able to follow instructions and clear orders, enjoy working with a range of different people each day, and have strong mechanical skills.

Primary Responsibilities:

Under the direction of a journeyperson:

  • Complete field level risk assessments.
  • Read blueprints, drawings and specifications to determine layout of plumbing system, water supply network and waste and drainage systems
  • Working under direction Supervision of a Journeyman Plumber to perform the following, but not limited to:
  • Locate and mark positions for pipe connections, passage holes and fixtures in walls and floors
  • Cut opening in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings
  • Measure, cut, bend and thread pipes using hand and power tools or machines
  • Join pipes using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement or soldering, brazing and welding equipment
  • Test pipes for leaks using air and water pressure gauges
  • Assemble and install valves and fittings.

Education & Experience:

  • Must be a registered apprentice with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training
  • Some high school or High School Diploma preferred
  • Some experience preferred and previous oil industry experience would be a benefit
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • CSTS and OSSA Regional Orientation or OSSA BSO (Basic Safety Orientation before December 31, 2018) or CSO (Common Safety Orientation after January 1, 2019)
  • WHMIS 2015
  • OSSA Confined Space Entry and Monitor
  • First Aid
  • Good mathematical, scientific, mechanical and logical reasoning abilities
  • Physical stamina required to use proper lifting techniques for heavy pipes weighing in excess of 25 kilograms, Stand, crouch and kneel for long periods of time, sometimes work in cramped positions
  • Safety conscious attitude
  • Ability to work well with co-workers and deal with customers
  • Ability to get along well with others on a work team
  • All applicants must have the ability to speak, read and write fluently in English.
