Job Purpose
Weld Inspectors are responsible for all aspects of inspection, and Quality Control in the facility alongside interfacing with fabrication crews.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Understanding and knowledge of owner and client specifications;
- Understanding of Academy’s QC Manual;
- Confirming that the dimensions of spools meet fabrication tolerances;
- Verifying all elements, and signing off on red stamp for cut sheets;
- Visually examining welds;
- Verify material grade/spec;
- Verify heat numbers;
- Flange face and bevel preps;
- Orientations confirmed;
- Dimension spools;
- Flag NDE;
- Coordinate NDE;
- Other: i.e. spools from PWHT, repads, etc.;
- Search for spools (work with shop to minimize);
- Maintain log / daily tracking sheet (i.e. spools dimensioned per day);
- Understands priority sequencing, and works to this sequence;
- Notifying QC Lead of defects or other quality issues;
- Working with welders when defects are found showing them what is unacceptable;
- Evaluating defects in materials (i.e. D-Meter checks, or depth of dent) and determining if they are acceptable or reject able. (Once an acceptance criterion is established);
- Ensuring welder and pipefitters are following WPS (i.e. Preheat, Up hand welding);
- Recording welding parameters to determine heat input: amps, volts, travel speed, (when required).
Requirements
- Minimum 3 Years of similar experience in a fabrication shop is required;
- CSA 178.2 Level I required;
- CSA 178.2 Level II considered an asset;
- Journeyman Welder ticket would be considered an asset;
- Experience with Bluebeam Revu would be considered an asset;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills;
- A good understanding of quality inspection procedures, code compliance, and equipment;
- Detail oriented.
