Overview

Caltrax is a full service railcar repair facility based in Calgary with mobile operations in Lethbridge, Alberta. We offer services for tank and freight car repair, interior lining, cleaning and painting. We are currently looking for an experienced Railcar Repair Technician with welding experience to join our group in Lethbridge.

In this role, you must be able to identify AAR/FRA violations and understand the necessary procedure for repair. Your previous mechanical experience will help ensure you maintain thorough and precise repair records as per regulations. In addition to general repair requirements, you will be required to use a cutting torch, complete a welding qualification test for arc welding and be able to read and understand blueprints/work orders. Freight and tank car repairs will be performed in confined spaces and from heights with a focus on safety at all times. You must be able to work extended hours Monday to Friday. Duties of the position include:

  • Perform scheduled and on demand maintenance including: welding repair to tank cars, air brake tests, pre-trip maintenance, clean surfaces for decaling, etc
  • Remove and replace defective components (trucks, shoes, coupler assemblies, air brake systems)
  • Safely operate acetylene torches, power tools (drills, power saws, grinders); electric and gas welding equipment and various hand tools (pliers, wrenches, hammers)
  • Repair rolling stock structural components
  • Fabricate, cut, and perform rough finish operations on metal and wood replacement parts; fasten and assemble car parts by riveting, bolting, welding, etc
  • Read, understand, and interpret work order information while maintaining accurate record of repairs
  • Independent troubleshooting and problem solving required
  • Ensure work meets regulatory requirements
  • Meet safety requirements at all times

Required Education, Skills and Qualifications

  • Completed High school education
  • Previous welding experience
  • Previous railcar repair experience a definite asset
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
  • Ability to work as part of a team is necessary
  • Make decisions independently while working in confined spaces and from heights
