Overview

Overview:
Performs skilled welding work to diagnose, maintain, repair, rebuild, overhaul, service, inspect, and test rails and railroad equipment.

Responsibilities:
Welds, brazes, cuts, grinds, and otherwise fits various metals to specific uses using gas and electric welding techniques and related metal working tools

Casts metal and preheats and cleans metals; lays out, cuts, and fits materials for welding, welds (sheets, machinery and equipment) using gas or electric arc welding equipment

Performs cutting and welding operations on steel rails

Brazes various ferrous and nonferrous metals

Inspects, brushes, and as necessary, grinds welds

Tempers tools and completes general repair work as needed

Directs and trains helpers and apprentices as assigned

Maintains a clean and well-organized work area

Other duties as required.

This position is covered under a collective bargaining agreement, membership to the respective union is required. Dues are deducted through payroll monthly.

This position is part of the Railroad Retirement Benefit (RRB) program, not social security.

Qualifications:
Education, Licensing, and Certifications:
High school diploma or equivalent, such as GED, with Department of Labor certification as a journeyman welder

Must possess a valid state commercial class A driver’s license with a good driving record.

Experience:
2 or more years of welding experience

Skills and Knowledge Required:
Good written and oral communication skills in English

Ability to follow oral and written instructions with minimal supervision

Ability to read, interpret and apply documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

Ability to safely operate a variety of standard and specialized hand tools and welding equipment

Ability to complete all training assignments and maintain qualifications where required.

Ability to read blue prints, schematics, and other mechanical diagrams

Ability to read and write routine reports, forms, and other documentation or correspondence

Ability to organize and perform work efficiently; strong attention to details

Travel requirement (as a percent): 100% of time spent in the field

Pre-Employment Requirements:
Must submit to drug testing and a background check

Must pass an oral test and interview

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules as needed. May be required to respond to emergencies 24 hours/7 days a week.

Must be able to work in the safety critical environments associated with operation of a rail system.

Must be able to stand and walk on uneven surfaces while working. Must be able to work while in the following positions or conditions: sitting, bending, twisting, kneeling, reaching, crouching, lying down prone or supine, at shoulder level or above, or any combination listed above.

Must be able to work at heights on platforms and man-lifts; must be able to work in pits and under lifted heavy equipment.

Must be able to work in all required Personal Protective Equipment and Safety gear

Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 lbs frequently

Must be able to work in extreme heat and cold and in a damp environment with moderate noise. May be exposed to water, fumes, and chemicals.
