To help achieve our business plans, Bruce Power has an opportunity in our Civil and Mechanical Design Department for a Technical Specialist.
The Pressure Boundary and Piping Programs section provides engineering support for piping inspection programs and pressure boundary quality assurance processes. The successful candidate will provide specialist expertise in a specific technical area required to sustain performance of assets and resolve technical problems related to processes, equipment or systems:
Key Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Section Manager, Pressure Boundary and Piping Programs and working as the Welding Engineer, this individual is responsible for:
Support repair, replacement and modification activities such as reviewing welding packages (pressure boundary, structural and non-code), preparing repair procedures, overseeing critical or non-routine welding operations and resolving welding issues and non-conformances.
Preparation and implementation of the Welding Program and supporting procedures
Must be able to qualify as a Welding Engineer as per CSA W47.1 for structural steel fabrication
Supporting Design engineering to ensure that the material specification, welding details, non-destructive examination and testing requirements on drawings conform to codes and regulatory requirements.
Supporting special welding applications such as plugging of steam generators and heat exchangers, instrument tube welding, end fitting welding etc.
Resolving site jurisdictional welding issues.
Supporting Supply Chain in the purchase of welding consumables, welded components and welding services.
Preparation, qualification and registration of welding and brazing procedures.
Participate in the presentation and preparation of welding training programs.
Other generic corporate engineering responsibilities include:
Develop, with appropriate direction from Manager, approved engineering programs which maintain/improve the performance of major processes, equipment or systems, e. g. standards, methods, procedures that meet best industry practices. This includes the planning, evaluating, advising and reporting on any activity which requires the application of engineering principles;
Assist station staff by contributing to the resolution of technical problems and implementation of approved solutions. Attempt to influence engineering staff towards accepting optimum approaches;
Communicate methods, inputs, assumptions, analysis limitations and the bases for conclusions in engineering deliverables, to support thorough reviews and informed decision-making.
Communicate emerging technical issues and the related potential risks to management and the operations staff as information becomes available, to ensure necessary compensatory and contingency actions are implemented;
Assist with implementation of Bruce Power Pressure Boundary Quality Assurance (PBQA) program
Provide ongoing support in the upkeep of the PBQA program, including monitoring of changes to Bruce Power documents that impact the QA program
Monitor SCRs and nonconformance’s to identify areas of noncompliance with the PBQA QA program and to ensure CNSC reportability requirements are addressed
Perform other duties as required
Education and Experience:
Requires a four year University degree in Mechanical Engineering, or other relevant discipline with post-secondary Welding specifications;
P.Eng designation or ability to obtain P.Eng designation is an asset.
Experience in leading the resolution of complex issues related to outages is required.
Must be able to qualify as a Welding Engineer as per CSA W47.1 for structural steel fabrication.
Requires knowledge and experience in the design, operation, or maintenance of chemical, nuclear, or fossil plants. Problem solving skills and experience with technical studies and evaluations are required;
Good knowledge and working experience with NDE techniques (VT, LP, MP, RT & UT)
Good knowledge of the following codes and standards, CSA B51, N285.0, W47.1, W59 and ASME B31.1/31.3, Sec III., VIII, IX Codes;
A period of over 6 years and up to and including 8 years of relevant experience is considered necessary.
