GRADE: Non-Exempt; Regular Full-time

REPORTS TO: Supervisor

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Fabricate components as needed from drawings and/or specifications provided by the government for use in climatic simulation or plant operation. Provide welding and fabrication support for all shops at MCL for maintenance and operational needs. Must have experience with operation and maintenance of welding equipment and performing TIG, MIG, acetylene/oxygen and arc welding on alloys, carbon steel, stainless steel, cast steel and aluminum.

Job Requirements

GENERAL DUTIES: Works independently to resolve moderately difficult tasks with occasional support and consult with higher level expertise as needed. Expected to be fully proficient in the area of expertise. Fabricate and assemble MCL components and assemblies. Including: creating, understanding and analyzing data from CAD drawings and other documents for Government specifications to determine feasibility of a design or application. Build innovative components to be installed, operated, and maintained in systems and fixtures for MCL simulations.

Operate and maintain all welding equipment and performing TIG, MIG, acetylene/oxygen and arc welding on alloys, carbon steel, stainless steel, cast steel and aluminum to close tolerances and in close proximity to aircraft and other test items located in an environmental test chambers.

Provide support for the fabrication of complex test fixtures to precise specifications including: research and analyze data to determine feasibility of a design or application. Fabricate innovative components to be installed, operated, and maintained in systems and fixtures for climatic simulations. Support the design, fabrication, and installation of controls, machines, valves, pumps and other pieces of equipment in support of the operations throughout the facility. Perform sheet metal work and operate and maintain all shop equipment. Provide Senior Welding support to plan, design, fabricate, modify and install test support fixtures or special unique tooling and prototype equipment. Perform technical feasibility studies of mechanical and welding modifications to existing environmental test equipment and systems. Conduct analysis as needed to propose solutions, corrections, and improvements for operation and maintenance of plant equipment to include the interpretation of blueprints and piping schematics. Perform field measurements on aircraft and other test items using precision instruments to engineer and fabricate tie-downs, restraints, and other specialty items.

Evaluate the effects of mechanical and welding modifications on equipment performance. Understand structural loads, to calculate size requirements in the fabrication of hardware, and to understand the principles of metallurgy.

Operate machine shop equipment and machine metals to close tolerances to include milling, cutting, drilling, and tapping a variety of materials, including ferrite and aluminum based materials. Conduct field measurements on plant equipment, aircraft, supporting structural equipment, and a variety of test items for welding fabrication when engineering drawings or blue prints may not be available.

Conduct qualitative assessments and analysis to determine the impact of various welding techniques on material suitability, structural design, and structural integrity. Troubleshoot, repair, install and align various equipment used in the operation and maintenance of plant equipment.

OTHER DUTIES: Provide input to technical specifications for procurement of components and subsystems to meet task requirements. Additional duties may be assigned to support contract/mission support requirements in job related areas.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Must have a current welding certification from an American Welder Society Accredited Test Facility. Must have Solid Works certification or accreditation, or have the ability to obtain the certification within 1 year. Must have 5 years of welding experience of which three years has demonstrated proficiency working in the MCL Welding or Fabrication shop to include operation of machine shop equipment and machine metals to close tolerances to include milling, cutting, drilling, and tapping a variety of materials, including ferrite and aluminum based materials.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: This position requires a Secret security clearance. Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Supports E-OMS operational objectives. Observes company Quality, Safety, Environmental, Security and Administrative policies; supports Process Improvement. Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a forklift license.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Works in temperature extremes from -65 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit or greater.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Required to lift loads as heavy as 50 pounds. Works at heights up to or in excess of 70 feet in elevation from ladders or high reach equipment.
