Position Summary

CIMCO Refrigeration is looking for a Shop Supervisor to work within our Manufacturing Division. We are a high mix/low volume custom job shop that fabricates a wide range of products including ASME Code pressure vessels, standard and custom piping subassemblies, skid mounted pre-piped packaged equipment assemblies, and electrical control panels. You will be responsible for providing supervision for all of our fabricated products.

Note: Training will be held in the Toronto office for a few months. Once it’s completed, the Shop Supervisor will be working from the Burlington office.

Role Responsibilities

  • Under general direction from the Shop Superintendent, the Shop Supervisor organizes workers, develops detailed shift plans, assigns work to subordinate staff, coordinates, and supervises the daily operations of the workers to meet the deadlines as set out by the Production Department
  • Identifies obstacles well in advance of them affecting productivity and delivery dates, and puts countermeasures in place to achieve the project outcomes required
  • Assigns work and priorities directly to the Unionized shop floor personnel
  • Monitors progress and modifies priorities as required
  • Provides continuous feed back and follow-up with shop floor personnel regarding productivity, quality of work, and general ability to follow direction
  • Recommends, implements, and evaluates policies, procedures, and standards for all aspects of the work performed
  • Makes recommendations for changes in staffing to meet workload demands
  • Assesses training needs for subordinates, develops training programs, and trains new and existing staff as required
  • Develops, implements, enforces, and maintains safety standards, policies, and procedures in compliance with Company Policy and Provincial laws and regulations to eliminate accidents and injuries
  • Conducts regular safety audits of the shop floor and performs investigations as required
  • Ensures that daily Safety Talks occur at the beginning of every shift
  • Reviews fabrication inspection and test plans developed by the Quality Control (QC) Department and implements hold points on the shop floor; advises QC department regarding readiness of work for inspection
  • Ensures welders are following WPS’s and supporting PQR’s
  • Issues Non-Conformance Reports as may be required during fabrication
  • Liaise with other Company departments as necessary
  • Maintains records
  • Attends twice-weekly Contact Meetings with personnel representing the following groups: shop floor, engineering, quality control, and purchasing
  • Updates Production Department / QC regarding NDE status on projects
  • Provides verbal and written reprimands as necessary to subordinate staff in a fair and consistent manner
  • This is a day-shift position – however, it may be necessary to move to afternoon shift temporarily if required

Required Professional Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience within a manufacturing environment involving welding
  • Has practical knowledge of metal fabrication as it pertains to ASME VIII-1 pressure vessels and heat exchangers, ASME B31.5 refrigeration piping and B31.3 process piping
  • Is able to assign welding work on the basis of welder performance qualifications in accordance with ASME IX
  • General knowledge of non-destructive examination (NDE)
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills
  • Comfortable in dealing with confrontation; able to diffuse difficult situations
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications and drawings
  • Able to lift 50 pounds
  • Comfortable operating computers and software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Candidates with a knowledge of SAP business software will be favoured
  • Able to work alone or in a collaborative team environment and accept responsibility for work performed
  • Strong time management skills – able to deal with conflicts and meet deadlines
  • Detail-oriented, ability to multi-task and prioritize

Education Requirements:

  • Post-Secondary Degree/Diploma or equivalent, preferably in technical fields of study
  • The ideal candidate will be a hands-on mechanically inclined individual able to use logic and reasoning to identify solutions to problems
  • A candidate with knowledge of Continuous Improvement/Lean Manufacturing principles and processes will be favoured
