Torque Industrial LTD is looking for a Structural Steel Fabrication Shop Manager. The candidate needs to be safety and quality driven as well as a strong leader, mentor and have good communication skills and the desire to grow with the business.

The candidate must have previous fabrication and supervision experience with a journeyperson background, have MS office experience, be a safety leader and mentor.

This will be a permanent full-time position in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Job Description:

The Shop Manager position involves but not limited to:

  • Scheduling, coordinating and supervising labourers, apprentices, and journeypersons in their respective duties of fabrication and repair.
  • Estimating and allocation of job times and costs,
  • Requisitioning and supplying detailed information for the purchaser to order supplies.
  • Maintain records, prepare daily reports, etc.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, mechanical assembly, ISOs, structural fabrication drawings supplied from engineers and other sectors.
  • Ability to obtain material take-offs from those drawings.
  • Controlling quality and ensuring employees adhere to the requirements of CSA 47.1 and 59.1
  • Having the ability to build and implement quality control packages and procedures.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and plan work schedules, supervise, and provide direction based on project requirements for shop and field services.
  • Ensure work activities and resources allocated to projects can support project schedules.
  • Troubleshoot and manage any interruptions or deterrents to projects. Communicate any issues, revisions, or anticipated project delays to management and clients as necessary.
  • Direct or mentor welders to accomplish and complete jobs efficiently, and to ensure that quality standards are met.
  • Understand and follow company safety policies and procedures and provide direction to staff on safety protocols.
  • Ensure safe operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Ensure parameters for specific welding procedures are followed as specified on work orders or to job specifications.
  • Coordinate materials, logistics and distribution of materials and ensure proper material tracking occurs with the purchaser, administration, and project managers involved in the project.
  • The ability to create programs and systems to maximize productivity and reduce the occurrence of quality NCRs.
  • May perform other general duties as required or as necessary to complete the project or task.
  • Candidates are responsible for exercising independence in determining priorities in keeping with established policies, procedures, safety standards, work commitments and providing technical assistance to employees.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Class 5 Driver’s Licence with clean Driver’s Abstract.
  • Communicate with respect and professionalism to management, administration, employees, and clients.
  • CWB Supervisor Certificate an asset but not required.
  • Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools and consumables of the welder, millwrights, and other related trades.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to modify schedules on short notice.
  • Must be able to plan and organize projects to meet deadlines on budget, safely and efficiently.
  • Experience with welding process’s FCAW, SMAW, GMAW, GTAW on mild steel, hardened steel, stainless, and aluminum.
  • Ability to build/implement QC Packages and structural procedures.
  • Ability to work with engineers, including not limited to weld engineer, CWB Rep for quarterly and bi-annual audits and reports.
  • Mechanical and electrical inclination is an asset.
  • Strong understanding of CSA Code W47.1 and 59.1 is an asset.
  • Understanding of B31.3 also an asset.
  • Extensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work is an asset.
  • Assist in maintaining shop supplies and inventory.
  • Act as a key contact for shop daily logs, safety statistics, equipment use and maintenance requirements.
  • Experience and Knowledge of supervisory foreman practices and principles and ability to effectively plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Firm-but-fair personality, capable of both keeping morale high while ensuring safety, quality and productivity standards remain excellent.
  • Capable of cultivating respect among the team.
  • Experience with fabrication both custom and production required.
  • Knowledge of codes and specifications with ability to interpret technical specifications as asset.
  • Ability to create an environment of respect and quality while promoting the company’s vision, culture, and mission both internally and externally.
  • Customer service focused.
  • Be able to follow directions, meet deadlines and direct the work of others.
  • Reliable and dependable with a high degree of flexibility and adaptable to changing priorities, results oriented.
  • Good problem-solving skills, able to use good judgment in response to unexpected problems.
  • Completion or willingness to obtain the following safety certifications: TDG, WHMIS, First Aid, H2S Alive, CSO.

Hourly wage to be negotiated at time of hire.

Salary: $90,000.00-$140,000.00 per year
